Jacob was back in the bush
Transfer deadline day meant the return of one of the show’s most literal football traditions: Bushwatch.
Reading supporter Jacob positioned himself in bushes near the Madejski Stadium so he could watch cars arriving and try to photograph players who might be about to sign for Reading FC. The idea had begun the previous year and had now become established enough that people knew who he was and came to see him.
Scott and Chris checked in as the transfer window approached its deadline, treating Jacob’s shrub-based reporting as a perfectly normal part of national football coverage.
The show also remembered its even less official “relationship transfer deadline day”, where listeners considered whether it was time to make changes in their own romantic lives.
Cel Spellman and Fay Ripley faced Innuendo Bingo
Cel Spellman and Fay Ripley from Cold Feet joined Innuendo Bingo. The pair took their places opposite Chris for another selection of clips whose innocent wording became much less innocent once everybody was trying not to laugh with water in their mouths.
It came at the end of a week in which Scott and Chris had been covering Breakfast, making the Thursday afternoon show feel like a return to their usual home.
Planet Girth was coming
The programme also revealed more of Chris’s latest collaboration with Chabuddy G from People Just Do Nothing.
The project was called Planet Girth, a parody nature documentary pitched as something like David Attenborough’s natural-history programmes filtered entirely through Chabuddy’s worldview. A trailer promised earth, animals, nature and, inevitably, an unnecessary amount of discussion about girth.
The previous day’s spoiler stunt continued to cause trouble too. Scott had been happily shouting old reveals in public, only to discover that his Broadchurch spoiler was still very much unwanted information for some listeners.
Bangers completed the afternoon with Chris’s choice, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake”, winning the listener vote.
