Scott had questions about rain
A discussion Scott had heard elsewhere on Radio 1 left him wondering whether running through rain actually made a person wetter or helped them spend less time getting rained on. It became exactly the sort of pointless question the show could happily argue about without ever needing a definitive scientific answer.
Show and Tell also brought in an American political clip that Scott had become fascinated by, while listeners continued the week’s discussion about people who had modelled their teenage identities on famous people.
One caller remembered copying Hayley Williams from Paramore, including dyeing her hair bright red. The attempt did not quite produce the intended shade and instead turned spectacularly orange.
Chris finally got Scott into football
Chris had spent years trying to make Scott care about football. His latest attempt was Fantasy Premier League, but Scott agreed to participate only if the selection process could be based on something he actually understood: which players he thought were attractive.
Chris explained that the game would award points according to how the real players performed each week. Scott was initially much more interested in hair, faces and general presentation than goals, assists or clean sheets.
The resulting team was called Yasss FC.
The name became even better when they discovered there was a real town called Yass in Australia and an actual football club using the name. Scott nevertheless kept his version, complete with the extra enthusiasm.
A football season suddenly mattered
The important consequence was that Scott now had a reason to pay attention to Premier League results. Chris had effectively converted him by building an entire fantasy squad around aesthetics rather than conventional football knowledge.
The experiment would become a running feature for the rest of the season, with Scott increasingly invested in a sport he had previously insisted he did not care about.
