6 December 2016: Ali Plumb protects Gabrielle Aplin from Chris’s cold

Chris is replaced for medical reasons

Chris insists he is well enough to work but refuses to risk passing his cold to Gabrielle Aplin, whose voice is her livelihood. Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb therefore becomes his Innuendo Bingo stunt double while Chris watches from the corner in a protective mask.

Before playing, Gabrielle brings mince pies despite never having eaten one herself. Her first bite confirms that she dislikes the dried fruit, and she nearly gags before the game has begun. Ali then absorbs the water intended for Chris as clips about unusual antiques, food and broadcasting accidents send both players into repeated spray-offs.

Shawn Mendes needs pop-star clothes

Scott praises Shawn Mendes’s Live Lounge performance but worries that he looks too ordinary. He initially mistakes the singer for a member of Grimmy’s production team and decides Shawn needs an enormous coat or another unmistakably famous outfit.

The sighting creates a wider question about whether stars should look recognisable even while walking through a radio station. Scott admits that he avoided acknowledging Shawn until he had checked twice, rather than risk confidently greeting an employee as one of the world’s biggest singers.

The jobs parents immediately distrust

The previous day’s discussion about impressing mums expands into careers that make a new partner’s parents suspicious. DJ remains Scott’s leading example, while listeners add soldiers, magicians and other jobs associated with travel, late nights or unreliable behaviour.

The criticism is often unfair, but callers recognise the need to compensate when introducing themselves. The sixth Whooovent Calendar door provides the day’s forgotten surprise, keeping the new festive ritual running alongside the awkward business of meeting families.
