23 September 2016: Ellie Simmonds smells beer and popcorn while winning gold

The red emergency telephone

Scott and Chris cover Friday Breakfast, prompting several people to check that Scott has remembered to wake up. His solution is a red landline marked “emergency”, whose number is known only to a few colleagues and managers.

The phone should succeed when Scott’s silent mobile, forgotten alarms or misplaced handset fail. He is already worried that distributing the number will attract PPI calls, but accepts it as a necessary defence against another missed Breakfast appearance.

Ellie returns from Rio

Five-time Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds describes the training required to remain among the world’s best swimmers. She first decided to pursue gold after watching the 2004 Paralympics and has now accumulated world, European and Paralympic titles while still only 21.

Rio felt unusually close to the crowd. During backstroke she could smell spectators’ beer and popcorn whenever she turned for air, a striking contrast with ordinary swimming meetings. Ellie admits that 21 can already feel old in her sport and is considering what the next phase should be after another successful Games.

A Friday for new students

Listeners travel to begin university with cars packed so tightly that rear windows disappear. Scott tells one new student that friendships do not need to become permanent immediately, while another caller’s mother plans to remain in Brighton until mid-afternoon and is firmly advised to leave much sooner.

Chase & Status discuss the pressure of their first Live Lounge since 2013 and the technical scale of the session. Bangers then offers Scott a chance to avoid a four-nil whitewash, completing a Breakfast programme built around new music, freshers and Friday relief.
