11 April 2016: Scott and Chris launch Library Tennis

Revision becomes a sport

Messages from students buried in revision inspired a new game. Two contestants would stand at opposite ends of a university library and imitate tennis players, with every grunt required to be louder than the one before. A quieter response, a refusal to continue or intervention from a librarian would end the rally.

The first match took place at Chester University. Graham and his opponent began cautiously, but the noises steadily travelled further through the quiet building and attracted more attention. Graham eventually produced a long, echoing effort that could not be answered. He was declared the first Library Tennis champion and celebrated by returning to his work.

Scott stressed that nobody should be thrown out during a busy exam period. The game was intended as a short revision break, although its success immediately made further fixtures inevitable.

What to do when a bear appears

A video showed a man confronting a large brown bear and driving it away by making himself loud and threatening. Scott and Chris debated whether they could reproduce the technique, with Chris believing his Watford football chants might be useful in an emergency.

Listeners supplied conflicting rules. One remembered “if it’s brown, lie down; if it’s black, fight back”, while a Canadian caller had received bear training during a workplace induction. Scott was astonished that bear-proof bins and pepper spray were ordinary precautions elsewhere, having received no equivalent guidance at Radio 1.

Bangers and unusual animals

Scott and Chris continued Battle of the Bangers before Greg James arrived for Real or No Real. The claims included celebrity hair insurance and increasingly elaborate animal stories, extending a period in which the game seemed to contain a remarkable number of talented pets.

The bear discussion also provided unfinished business. Scott still wanted to know how a real survival expert would respond, an idea that would become much more important when Bear Grylls visited later in the month.
