Pointless in suits
Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman arrived ahead of the Radio 1 and 1Xtra edition of Pointless Celebrities. Scott and Chris could not reveal the result, but repeatedly promised that they had made Pointless history.
The hosts were dressed much more formally than the usual Innuendo Bingo contestants and chose to keep their suits on. Osman reasoned that he and Armstrong were generally seen either in suits or almost naked, leaving no suitable middle ground. Both men understood that their fate depended on Chris and described his forceful spraying in language rather more elegant than the game normally received.
Clips included a Pointless contestant explaining that she had met her teammate at a beaver party, television discussion of going deep and a selection of familiar sporting and factual double meanings. The pair proved far less restrained than their television personas suggested. Osman in particular laughed through the game and sent water across the studio, while Armstrong absorbed several direct hits. Scott considered the combination of immaculate suits, gentle voices and complete commitment one of the strangest and best versions yet.
Fernando creates the opposite of a date
Chris’s friend Fernando returned with a dilemma involving his girlfriend’s best friend. His girlfriend had been delayed on a train, leaving Fernando alone with her friend for an hour before a smart evening event. They were both well dressed, met near his workplace and went to a pub, creating a scene that could easily have looked like a date.
Fernando wanted the friend to like him and report favourably to the rest of his girlfriend’s circle, but he also wanted to make it unmistakable that he was not interested in her. He ordered the cheapest lager, deliberately left a wet ring on the table, visited the toilet more often than necessary and finally announced that he had broken wind. Each move was intended to make the meeting less polished and more obviously friendly.
Scott found the anxiety relatable even if the solution was excessive. A listener admitted having the same problem when left alone with his girlfriend’s sister: appearing charming enough to win family approval without seeming remotely flirtatious required an almost impossible balance.
Chicken, trainers and Hogwarts
Greg James joined Real or No Real. The Tongan rugby team really had eaten at the same chicken restaurant for ten consecutive days during the World Cup, with some players visiting twice a day. A supposed London service that professionally wore in new white trainers was rejected, while the discussion exposed Scott’s irritation with supposedly temporary “pop-ups” that never seemed to disappear.
The final claim was also real: people could book a festive dinner in the Hogwarts Great Hall. Greg and Chris were much more excited by the prospect than Scott, whose limited knowledge of Harry Potter left him mainly asking whether the meal included Butterbeer.
The programme ended with the Student Tour ready to begin at Stirling on Monday and the Pointless Celebrities episode due on Saturday evening.
