Easter has already started
The office felt as if it had abandoned work early for Easter. Listeners admitted playing games, making unnecessary tea and stretching toilet breaks, while revising students were given official permission to stop at 1.45pm for Innuendo Bingo.
Scott and Chris were preparing to cover Breakfast on Bank Holiday Monday, when Radio 1 would play one-hit wonders all day. Scott expected an extraordinary parade of artists who had reached the Top 20 once since 2000.
Mike Duce faces the water
Lower Than Atlantis singer Mike Duce arrived in grey jeans, immediately admitting they were a poor choice. He and Chris filled their mouths as Scott worked through clips from television and radio.
Jeremy Kyle appeared to tell a guest that he had been “hard” the last time they met. A Hereford and Worcester presenter described Lord Hereford’s Knob as the most interesting thing she had ever been up, while a weather forecaster’s girth blocked the map.
The Magic Circle examined one another’s equipment and shared tips on technique. A cookery programme served chicken soup with cockscomb, and a contestant on The Cube considered taking something in the face.
Mike committed completely, sometimes spraying before the clips reached their endings and nearly leaving his chair under the force of the returning water. By the end he was physically wringing out his T-shirt and admitted the game had been better than expected.
Scott’s favourite newsreaders
Newsbeat promoted its first general election debate, hosted by Chris Smith and Tina Daheley in Leeds. Scott called them his favourite newsreaders, then revealed that he maintained an informal wider list.
Julie Etchingham, Alastair Stewart, Huw Edwards and Mary Nightingale were among his choices. Listeners added their own names while Scott tried to combine Chris and Tina into “Christina Smaheley”.
He rejected the idea that this was favouritism and treated newsreading in much the same way as his long-established enthusiasm for weather presenters.
The actor in Lethal Bizzle’s video
An actor contacted the show after appearing as a deliberately terrible magician in Lethal Bizzle’s “Fester Skank” video. He feared the man moving his forehead in a comedy talent-show audition might become his professional legacy.
His grander ambitions currently included being the third-choice understudy for an octopus in Madagascar Live. Scott reassured him that actors had to take available work and mentioned spending months in a lobster costume himself.
During Real or No Real, Scott confirmed that he had ended BBC Television Centre’s 2013 closing party by playing the BBC News countdown music. B Traits really had placed DJ decks over a treadmill, and Tom Hanks had reportedly tried to obtain the American rights to Mastermind so he could present it.
