Spanish Big Brother has a goat
Scott opened the week by trying to establish whether a goat was competing as a housemate on Spain’s Big Brother. Eighteen-year-old Hugo had entered with his goat Rubia, while a badly translated profile appeared to describe Rubia as his girlfriend of five months.
The goat was not necessarily nominating other contestants, but its presence was enough to remind Scott and Chris of their old animal-tennis commentaries. A recording of a goat rallying with another animal briefly returned to Radio 1.
Felicia tackles a British Christmas institution
YouTube singing teacher Felicia Ricci had previously taught the show to sing like Sia and Ariana Grande. Her festive assignment was “Fairytale of New York”, a song she had heard only once because it was much less familiar in America.
Felicia broke Shane MacGowan’s opening into low, nasal sounds and respelled “It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank” to reproduce his delivery. Kirsty MacColl’s cleaner part required a different position, before Scott and Chris reunited for the argument.
Their pronunciation of the insults became almost unrecognisable, but when the original recording played, the lesson unexpectedly worked. Felicia joined them for the performance and agreed to return for more experiments.
The mothers’ present exchange returns
Scott and Chris confirmed that each would again buy a Christmas present for the other’s mother. The recipient would be told it came from her own son, leaving him to explain and defend a choice he had never seen.
The previous year’s doormat had set an alarming standard. They considered whether the presents should be opened on Christmas Eve or saved for a live Christmas Day call.
James has five days to act
Listener James travelled between Cheltenham and Gloucester with the same woman every morning and evening. After two and a half months of eye contact, he still had not spoken to her. This was also his final week in the job, making Friday his last regular commute.
His first plan was to sit between her and the exit, pretend to sleep as they reached their shared stop and rely on her to wake him. Scott and Chris worried that he was overthinking everything, but sent him onto the evening train with the nation behind him.
