A much closer Wembley rematch
Radio 1’s football rematch was a considerable improvement on the previous 11–1 defeat. The Radio 1 Wanderers and Olly Murs’ Hot Murs finished level at 2–2, sending the game to penalties before Olly’s side finally won the shoot-out.
The rebuilt Radio 1 squad included James Arthur, Jamie Laing, Marvin Humes, Rizzle Kicks and former footballer Peter Reid. Mark Wright scored a penalty for Olly’s team, while missed kicks eventually left Jamie needing to score to keep the Wanderers alive. He could not, giving Hot Murs the win.
Greg James had opened proceedings with the national anthem while wearing a dress. Scott thought the result mattered, but the more surreal achievement was standing on the Wembley pitch among Radio 1 presenters, pop stars and people who genuinely belonged in football.
Scott runs out of commentary
Scott shared the commentary position with Guy Mowbray and Michael Owen. His preparation cards allowed him to insert a few football phrases, but at one point he openly admitted that he had run out of things to say.
Other contributions included wondering whether the Wanderers had a “hooker” on the team, getting confused between half-time and the second half, asking whether a draw would lead to penalties and identifying Gary Lucy in goal. He also accidentally cheered for the wrong side before remembering which station he represented.
The professionals helped him through, and Scott was proud that he had coped with a genuinely dramatic finish. Chris, working near the pitch as an assistant manager after being denied a playing place, was impressed despite continuing to question why Scott had been invited onto the Wembley turf before him.
Phil and Alice play Bingo
Phil Taggart and Alice Levine arrived for Innuendo Bingo ahead of their late-night Bedroom DJ party. Alice first had to correct the story that she once ate an entire Viennetta with a spatula after a night out. She accepted eating the whole ice cream, but insisted it was vanilla, not mint, and denied using the alleged utensil.
The clips included football commentary about a defender up a player’s backside, Martha Kearney promising pictures of her jam, Rick Stein wanting to suck the head of a crayfish and a turkey-processing employee described as the “top boner”. Anne Hegerty was delighted to have “got Dick”, while a BBC Leicester cook wanted something ground before being given a pound.
For the finale, the programme gave Phil and Alice actual Viennetta to hold in their mouths. They then faced Philippe Senderos promising to come strongly into a tackle and into somebody’s feet. Ice cream and water completed a particularly messy round.
Plans for the Christmas schedule
Scott and Chris were due to join Phil and Alice’s Bedroom DJ party the following night with a third instalment of “Songs to Lie Down To”. They also began wondering whether the programme needed its own television-style Christmas special.
Suggestions included a festive edition of Washed Up, the washing-up format they had invented earlier in the year, or a return to 24 Years at the Tap End. Scott was inspired by the large number of sentimental American Christmas films that appeared on dedicated television channels regardless of quality.
José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” also continued its rapid rise within the show. Scott and Chris treated it as their newly discovered festive anthem and imagined it accompanying increasingly unlikely Christmas scenes.
