30 May 2012: Chris proves Jerry Maguire does not work in an office

Chris proves Jerry Maguire does not work in an office

Danny Howard continued to cover for Grimmy and quickly revived Chris’s test of whether famous film moments work in ordinary life. The previous attempt had involved Chris trying to recreate Top Gun by serenading Gemma from the Radio 1 office, only to find that neither the song nor the crowd response had the desired cinematic effect.

For the next experiment, Chris chose Jerry Maguire. He went upstairs, announced that he was leaving and asked who was coming with him, expecting at least a little Tom Cruise-style solidarity. The office response was awkward rather than inspirational, and Chris returned having established that a dramatic resignation speech is much less persuasive when people still have emails to answer.

The show followed the enormous reaction to the previous day’s Gok Wan item. Danny and Chris replayed the repeated mentions of Gok’s wok, fully aware that the joke was cheap but unable to stop it working. Listeners supplied more deliberately terrible puns, which only encouraged the team to keep the subject going.

Greg James joined the programme for a game built around Donald Trump’s genuine trademarks. Chris and Greg offered increasingly unlikely possible products, from cereal to swimwear, hoping one would be real. The game had the same appeal as the rest of the show, an official-looking list turned into a reason to say absurd phrases on Radio 1.

Danny’s cover edition was deliberately restless, moving from film recreations to television catch-up and games with invented points. Chris’s failed office walkout was the clearest payoff, confirming that real colleagues are not usually waiting for the right speech before abandoning their jobs in support of him.
