Beccy loses a rap battle to Grimmy
Friday’s programme began with Chris questioning whether One Direction were working hard enough while on tour in Australia and New Zealand. Beccy patiently explained that performing every night, travelling and doing early-morning interviews probably counted as work, even if the newspapers were concentrating on surfing and clubbing photographs.
The central event was the long-awaited rap battle with Grimmy. Beccy had practised hard and took the competition far more seriously than she expected, while Grimmy leaned into the silliness of it. By the end, the informal verdict went his way, but Beccy’s commitment made the defeat feel slightly unfair, and listeners were quick to praise her effort.
Another game tested Radio 1 office politeness by circulating a leaving card for a fictional colleague called Sarah from the website. Eighteen people signed it without questioning who Sarah was, producing messages about how lovely she had been to work with and how much she would be missed, even though she had never existed.
Show and Tell then exposed another gap in Chris’s food experience. He admitted he had never eaten a peach, a digestive biscuit or peanut butter, so Beccy brought in a series of samples. The peach and digestive passed easily, but peanut butter did not, and the later introduction of Vegemite proved too much, leaving Chris being sick into a bag beside the studio bin.
It was a properly chaotic Friday: a fake farewell, an earnest rap contest and Chris’s culinary education all sitting alongside the ongoing Tap End stories. The programme’s victory belonged to Grimmy, but Beccy had at least managed to make the battle a memorable one.
