Danny Howard and Greg James test who will betray England on Stupid Street
Danny Howard was joined by Greg James for a Friday edition which began in the reliably silly territory of “sweaty back”. Chris had nearly caught Danny out with the playground-style move, tapping a perspiring friend’s T-shirt so it sticks to their back, while the pair also discussed making up Spanish lyrics to Danza Kuduro when they had no idea what the real words were.
The main Stupid Street game was prompted by England playing Scotland in rugby that weekend. Danny and Greg wanted to know whether people would give up a bit of national pride simply to get their voice on Radio 1, by agreeing to deliver an enthusiastic, and usually terrible, “Come on Scotland”.
Greg first tried to judge the contestants from tiny clips of their voices. Will from Maidstone sounded, to him, too proper to betray England, but the prediction was immediately complicated when other English interviewees cheerfully put on Scottish accents and backed Scotland without much persuasion.
The biggest misread was Joe from Plymouth. Greg was certain that Joe would stand firm as an England supporter, only for him to agree to cheer Scotland and offer an accent of such uncertain quality that the studio could barely work out what he had said. Caroline also joined in after Smooth Talking Dan’s encouragement.
There was even an Australian bonus round. Danny and Greg assumed the old England–Australia rivalry would stop Jessie from saying “Come on England”, but she did it without hesitation. The feature ended with the running joke that a few seconds on Stupid Street had apparently left listeners disowned by their own countries.
