20 September 2011: Grimmy’s big shop turns into a fashion-week picnic

Grimmy’s big shop turns into a fashion-week picnic

Grimmy opened by repeatedly announcing that it was six o’clock when it was actually four. He blamed the 24-hour clock, the microphone cable and possibly closing one eye when he looked at it, but Beccy had already noticed that his confusion was making people think they could go home early. It was exactly the kind of small broadcasting failure he enjoyed turning into a running joke.

He and Beccy had intended to be healthy by drinking two litres of water during the show, but their attempt was undermined by Greg James’s shopping request. Grimmy had been sent to buy a specific kind of cracker, wandered through the supermarket looking for it and returned with what he called a full “big shop” for Greg, while the presenters themselves had only water and no snacks.

The previous evening’s fashion show provided the day’s best image. Grimmy found the event crowded, hot and faintly stressful, although he had a front-row seat beside Dannii Minogue because his niece was working on the show. Across from him, an important-looking woman with wild hair calmly unpacked a plastic tub of cake and began eating it during the catwalk.

That detail delighted the studio. Grimmy immediately imagined a front row where someone brought a Scotch egg, treated an oversized alligator bag as a picnic hamper and ate through the show with no embarrassment. The fashion crowd’s supposed glamour became much funnier once it was reduced to somebody quietly having cake from Tupperware.

He also championed Homes Under the Hammer, particularly presenter Martin Roberts’s habit of seeming to argue with himself while inspecting properties. A clip of Roberts reconsidering his own renovation plan became an instant favourite, proving that Grimmy’s cover shows could get just as invested in daytime television as they were in pop guests. Britney Spears, Jedward and a planned round of Danny Howard Points rounded out a packed, happily unfocused afternoon.
