One Direction answer the question, “Why are you so fit?”
One Direction came into the studio with their new single, bringing a level of excitement that was immediately obvious outside Radio 1. Scott spoke to a fan who had waited for the band and asked her to prepare one sensible question. Her eventual contribution was much more direct: “Why are you so fit?”
The question became the day’s running joke. Scott and the team loved the fact that the most pressing thing a fan could ask was not about the single, the band’s plans or The X Factor, but an unabashed assessment of all five members. It was exactly the sort of unpredictable live radio moment that could not have been planned.
Away from One Direction, Scott had been invited to Joey Essex’s birthday party. He was not convinced that he was sufficiently “reem” for the occasion, and the show enjoyed the thought of Scott attempting to navigate Joey’s world. It also strengthened the growing sense that the Edinburgh cabaret would be a collision of people who would not normally share a bill.
The team continued its search for a Frenchman, extending a deliberately vague on-air mission that depended on listeners joining in with the hunt. The feature had the show’s usual mixture of confidence and no clear plan, with Scott willing to make the appeal sound much more urgent than it really was.
They also confirmed that Frisky & Mannish would be joining the Edinburgh line-up. Between the One Direction visit, Joey Essex’s party and another cabaret announcement, the programme felt like an increasingly busy summer noticeboard, held together by Scott’s enthusiasm and Beccy’s ability to keep the conversation moving.
