It’s Only Bley Friday on Breakfast
Scott marked the end of his week covering the Breakfast Show with an especially loud, Miami-style It’s Only Bley Friday. It gave the programme the familiar rush into the weekend while also providing a chance to revisit the strange threads that had accumulated across the week, from the imagined future downfall of Greg James to the increasingly elaborate television plans for Chris.
Jennifer Lopez’s appearance still had the team amused. Scott had congratulated her on the attention paid to a brief scene in The Back-up Plan, only for Jennifer to point out that the moment had involved a body double. The detail turned an ordinary celebrity interview into another of the show’s memorable, slightly awkward exchanges.
Chris and Lorraine Kelly played Word Dissociation, the rule being that every new word had to have no connection to the previous one. The game was quickly overtaken by arguments about whether words such as tomato and tiger were linked by colour, whether camels and sandcastles had too much desert in common, and whether Chris could plausibly claim a connection through a taxi company from where he used to live.
The Home and Away singalong also remained a running success, despite the tension of the Post Office attempt. Scott was convinced that the lone person who joined in had shown the feature could work, while Chris was still recovering from having to sing in front of a captive, silent queue. The contrast between Scott’s enthusiasm and Chris’s discomfort was the point of the whole experiment.
The final programme collected the best of the week’s podcasts for listeners who had missed them, but it still moved quickly enough to feel like a live Friday show rather than a compilation. Scott’s cover had established its own rhythm, using celebrity guests, deliberately flimsy games and Chris’s day-to-day embarrassment to bridge the gap until Greg James returned.
