Sara and Beccy help raise more than £250,000 for Comic Relief

Sara and Beccy began with a dilemma from Beccy’s train journey: should she tell a smartly dressed stranger that he had a large hole in his trousers? She had noticed it opposite her on the train but could not bring herself to say anything. Listeners suggested notes, discreet receipt messages and other ways of sparing someone the embarrassment, while Sara wondered whether a small public-service campaign might be needed for wardrobe emergencies.

The programme also found room for a game based on celebrity tweets, including a deliberately unglamorous post about a stomach ache relieved by farting. It was the usual mix of pointless investigation and Scott Mills Points, with Sara and Beccy treating every guess as though a serious scoreboard depended on it.

The mood changed when they spoke to Scott in the desert. He described the contrast between the group’s long walks and the villages they were passing, where people had very little but still welcomed them. Scott spoke emotionally about how readily he had taken ordinary things such as water, lights and a comfortable bed for granted before the trek.

Back in London, Sara and Beccy made a direct appeal for Comic Relief. Beccy became tearful after hearing from Scott and reading listeners’ messages, while Sara explained the practical support the charity funded in the UK and Africa, from help for young carers and lonely older people to projects supporting families in acute difficulty.

Their target was £250,000. Rather than merely reaching it, the listeners carried them beyond it, to £250,856. Sara and Beccy were delighted, and the day made clear that Scott’s trek had become a shared Radio 1 effort rather than a remote celebrity challenge.
