The Birthday Game: Nick
Nick from Peterborough loved live music and was preparing to see Duran Duran.
His preferred era was the 1980s, including Thompson Twins, Nik Kershaw, Howard Jones and Spandau Ballet.
His first spin was Marvin Rainwater’s Whole Lotta Woman. Nick rejected it.
The second was Westlife’s Swear It Again. He chose to gamble once more.
His compulsory third song was Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe, number one in 2012.
Nick said he preferred it to Westlife and accepted the final result.
Paris Hilton returns to Radio 2
Paris Hilton reunited with Scott after their appearance together on Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend in 2009.
Scott remembered spending hours in a north London house helping to assess people auditioning to become Paris’s new friend.
Paris remembered the programme as peak 2000s television and said she had remained in touch with its winner, Sam, for a period afterwards.
They also revisited the show’s use of “I’ve got a text” years before the phrase became closely associated with Love Island.
Creating the Paris Hilton character
Scott described Paris as an early blueprint for the modern influencer.
Paris said the familiar breathy-voiced public character had partly been a response to trauma and shyness.
Playing the character allowed her to feel less exposed, although it eventually became magnified by The Simple Life and the wider celebrity culture around her.
She said social media now offered talented people the chance to build brands with only a phone and internet connection, but also exposed young users to unrealistic beauty standards, trolls and constant judgement.
Motherhood and Phoenix
Paris discussed becoming a mother to her son Phoenix.
She said motherhood had made her feel that her life was finally complete and praised mothers for the amount of work involved.
Her husband Carter had learned to change nappies and she enjoyed seeing him with their son.
Phoenix’s favourite lullaby was Stars Are Blind.
Paris also used fan and sleep-sound apps to help settle him, continuing a habit she had inherited from her own mother.
New music
Paris said she was writing, producing and recording new music ahead of summer performances.
Miley Cyrus, Meghan Trainor and Sia had all sent her songs or contributed ideas.
Scott suggested their group chat should be called “Icons Only”.
Paris: The Memoir
Paris said writing her memoir had been cathartic and therapeutic.
She felt the book had allowed people to understand and respect her in a way that had not always happened during the most intense period of her fame.
Scott ended by replacing the old British Best Friend sign-off “talk to you never” with his own “love you, bye”.
Handover
Scott handed over after playing Stars Are Blind and previewing Loreen’s visit from Liverpool.
