30 January 2023: Rylan denies buying Blobby and Claire risks the final spin

Training yourself to be sophisticated

Scott revealed that Sam had ordered sparkling water during dinner despite not actually liking it.

Sam had decided to train himself to enjoy it because he believed sparkling water appeared more sophisticated.

Listeners admitted making similar attempts with olives and SodaStream water, while one warned Scott not to marry someone who chose sparkling over still.

Tony Blackburn turns 80

Scott celebrated Tony Blackburn’s 80th birthday and promoted a BBC Sounds programme looking back at his career.

One archive story involved Tony offering to repair Cliff Richard’s internet connection at his Barbados home. Tony estimated the job would require two weeks, which made Cliff suspect he was mainly seeking a free holiday.

Scott also revisited Tony’s admission that he had once become trapped inside a Mr Blobby costume.

The £62,000 Mr Blobby auction

A Mr Blobby costume had attracted a winning eBay bid of £62,101 after starting at £39.

The costume had not appeared on Noel’s House Party. It had been produced for an overseas adaptation that was cancelled before reaching television.

The listing warned that the ageing costume had visible creases and needed glue in places.

Listener Claire suspected either Scott or Rylan had placed the enormous bid.

Scott denied involvement, but agreed Rylan was a plausible suspect because he had a Big Brother diary room in his house and had shown interest in acquiring the bus from Spice World.

Rylan sent a message refusing to confirm or deny whether he had bought it. He added that anyone who spotted Blobby dancing to Steps should mind their own business.

The Birthday Game: Claire

Claire from the Isle of Skye turned 43.

She had celebrated in Glasgow with friends during a weekend that became bigger than planned and admitted she no longer recovered from shots as if she were 21.

She shared her birthday with Phil Collins, Peter Crouch, Olivia Colman and Wilmer Valderrama.

Her first spin was Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, which had spent 14 weeks at number one. Claire liked it but chose to gamble.

Her second choice was Love Affair’s Everlasting Love. She rejected that as well and accepted the compulsory final spin.

The third song was Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is, number one on her birthday in 1985.

Claire was pleased with the power ballad, although she admitted she might have preferred to keep Ed Sheeran.

Napping at work

Scott asked listeners whether they had secretly slept at work after reports that staff at Twitter’s headquarters were being encouraged to rest.

A dental worker used the treatment chair between appointments.

A school employee regularly watched a colleague fall asleep in meetings and began taking bets on how long he would remain awake.

Bobby Pryor remembered working backstage at the Edinburgh Fringe. Once the house lights were down and the main spotlight was up, she could sleep at the mixing desk for half an hour before waking to operate the end of the show.

Scott admitted he had fallen asleep on air once while presenting Radio 1’s Early Breakfast programme. His producer ran into the studio, shook him awake and made him start the next record.

The Music Police

Scott reopened the Music Police after solving Carrie’s mystery as La Bouche’s Be My Lover the previous week.

One listener remembered a song containing the apparent lyric: “Derek ate the last sausage.” Scott’s investigation found no evidence that any such record existed.

Mark from Corby had a more promising clue. He remembered a melody alongside words resembling: “Tell me to run, run, run without you.”

Mark had first heard the unidentified song while playing a music game and had been unable to locate it again.

The case was left open for listeners to investigate.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox after admitting he had still forgotten to bring his new glasses into work.
