8 February 2007: Playing for Rob’s Stuff with His Mum

Scott calls up a listener’s mum who’s been selling her son’s possessions in the local newspaper without permission—then turns it into a twisted game of Play Your Cards Right to win the items back.

Rob, a listener who moved out three years ago but still keeps his room at his mum’s house in Cornwall, gets an unexpected shock when his mate spots an advert in the local paper selling everything from his bedroom. Scott calls Rob’s mum and discovers she’s offloading videos, games, magazines, and musical instruments at bargain prices without any warning. Rather than simply returning the items, Scott decides to host an improvised auction game where Rob and producer Joe Cole have to guess the prices his mum is asking for various belongings.

The items up for grabs include an acoustic electric guitar (priced at £10), a Nintendo 64 with TV (also £10), a thimble collection from Rob’s childhood (£2 for the lot), and a bundle of videos including Thundercats, Pretty Good (the Tom Green film), and Barbed Wire. Rob manages to win back some of his possessions—the Nintendo 64, TV, and thimble collection—while losing the guitar and videos to Joe Cole. The whole lot originally valued at far more sells for just £39 as a job lot, and Rob discovers his mum kept the proceeds.

The show also features a caller named Mark who shares an even more dramatic tale: his parents moved house while he was at school without telling him, leaving him to come home to a completely empty house. The episode closes with various jingles and listener calls, including Sue Marchant from BBC Radio Norfolk reading out song requests, and regular debates about what constitutes a lie on the show.
