13 May 2008: Nelly YMCA, Wings at Big Weekend, Beat The Star Pea Game

Chappers is tricked into believing Nelly performed YMCA at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and Scott reveals he’s lost the only CD of Wings’ performance at the festival — except for one song captured off the radio.

The episode opens with a brilliant wind-up: Scott and the team had asked listeners to text in song requests for Nelly’s Big Weekend set, including YMCA, and when a clip appears to show Nelly performing it, Chappers is genuinely convinced it happened. A caller from Birmingham catches him out, and Scott relentlessly mocks him for falling for it.

The show then moves to coverage of Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Maidstone. Scott had personally funded the flight of a New Zealand artist called Wing to perform at the BBC Introducing stage, which was absolutely packed. Scott played a clip of Wing performing “Mamma Mia,” but then revealed an embarrassing problem: someone handed him a CD with Wing’s entire set as he left the venue, and he lost it in a bar — the only copy. The only performance they can play is “Mamma Mia,” because that was recorded during the live broadcast. Scott promised to try to find another copy of Wing’s “Candle in the Wind” performance, which apparently impressed the crowd more than anything else.

There’s also a segment on this week’s *Beat The Star*, featuring Vernon Kay hosting a game where contestants drop peas into bottles — a deliberately ridiculous game that exemplifies the show’s tendency to invent daft challenges. Scott and Chappers riff on how every industry seems to have an “Oscars of” awards ceremony now.

The final segment reveals that Scott and Chappers are actually not in the studio: they’ve recorded the whole last hour because they’re attending the Sony Radio Awards that evening, leaving Beccy to provide live content.
