21 August 2007: Golden Moments and The Bubba Game

Scott’s away on holiday in northern France with his dad, so today the show runs a highlights episode featuring some of his best-loved bits, starting with the infamous “Bubba Game” — a feature that has won multiple international radio awards.

With Scott on holiday, Danny Howard and the team play out a selection of golden moments from the show’s archive. The episode opens with The Bubba Game, Scott’s award-winning prank call feature in which he attempts to convince American Waffle House employees that a person named “Bubba” works there. The calls are chaotic and mostly unsuccessful, with confused staff members unable to help locate anyone by that name.

The show then revisits the Girls Aloud phone number incident, where the team supposedly gave out a celebrity’s number on air (actually their own) to see what responses they’d get. The segment features hilarious voicemail messages from listeners attempting to chat up what they thought was a band member — including one lengthy, earnest message from a caller providing a full physical description and listing his IT job and car as selling points. The team later callback some callers using terrible Girls Aloud impersonators from the Radio 1 building.

Another highlight features the notorious “Livestock Lounge” feature, in which Mark Chapple (who has a genuine animal phobia) is blindfolded and forced to identify animals by kissing them. The segment descends into chaos as he encounters a rabbit, duck, lamb, and snake, with increasing panic and discomfort — particularly when a duck escapes and begins flapping around the studio.

The episode also includes a bookshop prank call and a text-messaging speed race between Laura and Chappers, which ends with a twist when the team reveals they’ve sent the offensive phrase to someone else’s phone entirely.
