26 July 2007: Casualty Hurts Scott’s Car

Scott tries to make amends for his past misdeeds by playing a quiz game where Joe destroys his beloved Nissan Micra with a sledgehammer and eventually a tank — all to settle scores over pranks involving fake “Casualty” calls to other Radio 1 DJs.

As part of his ongoing attempt to restore his karma, Scott allows Joe Bugden to wreak havoc on his pride and joy: a Nissan Micra that’s been languishing in the BBC car park near Broadcasting House for months, much to the annoyance of the director general and other management. The car has history — Scott originally bought it hoping Tim Westwood would “pimp it,” but Westwood refused, leaving Scott with an unwanted vehicle that’s been parked and neglected ever since.

The format is a quiz game called “Casualty Hurts Scott’s Car”: Scott answers five questions on topics ranging from the Pixar film Cars to Formula One to Knight Rider to Top Gear presenters. For each wrong answer, Joe gets to damage the car. Scott’s knowledge proves shaky — he doesn’t know Lightning McQueen from Cars, confuses James May with Brian May from Queen, and misses the Herbie number. By the end, Joe has smashed wing mirrors, shattered windows, and systematically destroyed the vehicle.

The finale is appropriately apocalyptic: Joe, commanding an actual tank, drives it directly over the flattened remains of the Nissan Micra, reducing it to scrap metal. Scott narrates the destruction with resigned acceptance, framing it all as deserved cosmic payback for his earlier pranks — particularly the scheme where he’d called various DJs impersonating “Casualty” saying suggestive things, leaving them confused about his intentions.
