27 July 2007: Float Divert Answerphone Messages and Mis-Teeq

Scott and the team play a selection of hilarious messages left on the show’s float divert answerphone — a feature where listeners give out a fake number when they want to dodge someone asking for their contact details — and somehow Mis-Teeq appears to be among the callers.

The float divert answerphone is a running feature where listeners share the voicemails they receive after handing out the show’s number instead of their own to people they want to avoid. This episode kicks off with a string of entertaining messages: one caller who just says “hello” after 20 seconds of silence, a half-hearted attempt at arranging a meetup that trails off into apathy, and a particularly forward proposition that sparks a lengthy tangent between Scott and the team about the phrase “rumpy pumpy” and what sort of message-leavers actually use it.

The conversation swings into personal territory when Scott shares one of his favourite stories — a tale of dating someone for just a week, getting a headache on the planned dumping day (coinciding with Barcelona’s 4-0 Champions League thrashing), and waking up to find the girl eating chips in his room. The story escalates into discussion of her unfortunate name, China, which Scott found mortifying at the time. The team finds the whole anecdote hilarious, particularly Scott’s matter-of-fact admission that he kept the chips after the breakup.

The episode takes an absurd turn when what appears to be a message from Mis-Teeq member Christy Wright plays on air — though the heavily accented and garbled message (“came back to York for some winky,” “more than stinking in a village”) makes it genuinely unclear whether this is actually the pop group or an elaborate wind-up.
