Newsreader Fiona Bruce becomes an unlikely guest on Flirt Divert, the show’s weekly feature where celebrities read out cheeky text messages sent to the show’s number — though she proves rather more restrained than the team might have hoped.
As part of the Wednesday celebrity Flirt Divert segment, Scott and the team managed to persuade BBC News anchor Fiona Bruce to participate in reading out listener texts. The feature invites famous guests to deliver the often-suggestive messages that come in, typically at 4:45pm each week. Bruce obliged by reading several texts, though predictably she declined to read the most explicit ones, sticking instead to the milder submissions like “Call me, I’ve heard some native gossip about you” and “Don’t forget your dad’s birthday on Friday, love Mom.” The team attempted to spice up even her safe readings by adding emphasis in unexpected places, turning her delivery into something more amusing than the original texts warranted.
The episode also featured a musical storyline involving a caller named Maria, who had written a song for a boy she’d gone on just one date with. Rather than sending flowers or chocolates in the traditional way, Maria had recorded an entire dance track dedicated to him and subsequently an album. Despite the speed and intensity of her romantic gesture, the boyfriend stuck around. The segment played the song Maria had created and explored the unusual dynamic of a woman pursuing a man through music, turning the usual pattern of “songs from blokes trying to get back with girls” on its head.
