20 April 2007: The Livestock Lounge – Kissing Animals Blindfolded

Scott and the team transform the live lounge into a “livestock lounge” for a wild new game where a blindfolded contestant must identify animals purely by kissing them — featuring a rabbit, a duck, a lamb, and a snake, with hilariously panicked results.

In what becomes one of the most chaotic moments in the show’s history, Scott Mills introduces an elaborate new game designed to make up for past on-air mishaps (fallen treadmills, injured contestants). The live lounge is covered in plastic sheeting and fire alarms are protected as a precaution. A contestant (referred to as “Chopper”) is blindfolded with a scarf and led into what’s christened the “livestock lounge” — in reality, the live lounge filled with farm animals courtesy of City Farm and London Zoo.

The game is simple but terrifying: kiss each animal and guess what it is. The first animal is a fluffy rabbit, which Chopper initially mistakes for a guinea pig. The second is a duck, which Chopper correctly identifies after some difficulty — and reveals he’s been afraid of ducks since being bitten by one aged four. The duck causes considerable chaos in the studio, flapping wildly and requiring staff to manage its movement. The third animal is a lamb, which produces an unfortunate smell of faeces on the live lounge floor, leading to nervous laughter and admissions of anxiety-induced flatulence from the team. For the final round, Chopper kisses a snake, and upon removing his blindfold discovers it’s actually wrapped around his neck, prompting genuine panic and screams.

Throughout the game, Chopper expresses extreme discomfort, describing it as “the worst moment I’ve ever had here” in seven and a half years, while Scott, Joe, and Laura laugh at his genuine terror. The segment ends with thanks to the animal handlers and a promise that video highlights will be posted online at BBC Radio 1’s website later that day.
