23 May 2006: What Fish Am I?

Chappers unveils his latest game show format: a blindfolded Scott has to identify fish by touch and cryptic clues, with the prize of taking them home for tea.

Chappers, who works on the show and has been pitching game formats to TV companies, presents his newest creation: “What Fish Am I?” Scott is blindfolded while Laura, described as “my glamorous assistant,” places actual fish in his hands. Chappers provides riddle-style clues to help Scott identify each fish purely by touch and feel.

The first fish is cod, identified with the clue “I am the Lord Almighty, but I begin with sea.” Scott successfully guesses it and wins the fish to take home. The second fish is salmon, identified via the clue “I wrote the Satanic Verses”—a reference to author Salman Rushdie—which Scott works out. The third fish is sea bass, with a more convoluted clue about the first half of a spy’s surname (James Bond) combined with “A, B, C”—though Scott struggles with this one and apparently gets slapped in the face with the fish as a forfeit.

The format comes across as deliberately absurd and uncomfortable, following Chappers’ previous game show ideas including “Car Alarm or Not” (kicking car tyres) and “Meal or No Meal” (where Scott ate dog food). Scott’s reluctance to hold the fish and his growing discomfort throughout add to the comedy, making this classic radio entertainment that works precisely because of how awkward and silly it is.
