28 April 2006: Sophie and Laura Meet Hilary Duff at Concert and Interview

Two massive Hilary Duff fans – Sophie and Laura, who works on the show – go to a Hilary Duff concert together, and Laura secures a backstage interview that becomes increasingly uncomfortable as her questions veer from flattery into invitation-to-stay-at-my-house territory.

Sophie, a long-time Hilary Duff superfan, had won concert tickets and generously offered one to Laura, a fellow devotee who works on the Scott Mills Show. After attending the gig together (where Sophie even got a song dedication from Hilary), Laura made a bold move: she contacted Hilary’s management and requested an interview. Surprisingly, they agreed, with no security present.

What followed was uncomfortable viewing. Laura’s interview questions ranged from complimentary but awkward (“Why are you so great?”) through increasingly personal territory. She asked Hilary about her hair, pitched the idea of turning her own diary into a film with Hilary playing her, and suggested Josh Hartnett for the male lead. Then came the creeping question: “Would you like to come and stay at my house?” When Hilary politely demurred, Laura pressed on: “Can I get your phone number? We can become best friends.”

The studio audience and listeners texting in found the whole thing cringingly awkward. Danny Howard read out messages from listeners saying things like “I’m going a slight shade of red,” “My insides are chilling,” and “Poor Hilary. Run, Hilary. Run.” It was well-intentioned fan enthusiasm gone wrong – the kind of moment that makes for genuinely uncomfortable radio, though everyone survived intact.
