14 April 2006: Laura’s Date with Gareth, Waking the Flatmate, and Chappers’ Food Game

A bumper edition of the week’s best moments, featuring the aftermath of Laura’s blind-date trip to Disneyland Paris with listener-voted companion Gareth, a rude awakening prank on an inconsiderate flatmate, and Chappers’ blindfolded food guessing game where dog food is on the menu.

The show opens with Danny Howard recapping the week’s highlights. Laura and Gareth return from their Disneyland Paris date arranged by Radio 1 listeners. Both give measured assessments of their chemistry—Gareth appreciates Laura’s personality and finds her attractive, while Laura finds him sweet but isn’t entirely convinced of romantic potential. Despite the lukewarm vibes, they playfully suggest they might “grow into” something, and Gareth hints they’re “actually engaged” (clearly tongue-in-cheek). The standout moment comes when they execute an elaborate prank on Laura’s flatmate Rich, who’s been keeping her awake with loud music at 2–3 a.m. Laura, armed with Rammstein and a megaphone, lets herself into Rich’s flat and gives him a shock wake-up call, with Danny Howard phoning to deliver a stern warning: stop the noise or face nightly alarms.

Next, the team attempts to get Blackpool Airport renamed “Casualty International” after the TV show. They call the airport’s marketing department and manage to get the proposal added to the board’s agenda—so successfully that an online poll appears on the airport’s website.

The episode closes with a game show pastiche hosted by Chappers called “Meal or No Meal.” Scott and Laura are blindfolded and must guess mystery tinned foods; whoever gets the tin of dog food loses. Scott correctly identifies fruit, while Laura draws steak chunks. The dog food survives another round, leaving both contestants relieved.
