Sara Cox confirms Ellie Brennan and Matt Carter for new Radio 2 Breakfast Show

BBC Radio 2 has confirmed that Ellie Brennan and Matt Carter will join Sara Cox’s new Breakfast Show team when the programme launches next month.

Ellie Brennan will remain on the breakfast slot, continuing to provide listeners with the latest travel updates, while Matt Carter takes over responsibility for the programme’s regular news bulletins.

The appointment follows the announcement that Tina Daheley is stepping down from the Breakfast Show after more than seven years on Radio 2’s flagship morning programme. During Scott Mills’ time as host, she was affectionately referred to as his “work wife” by listeners.

Sara Cox officially takes over the breakfast slot on Monday 6 July, broadcasting weekdays from 6.30am until 9.30am.

The show’s first guest will be Hollywood star Tom Hanks, who will join Sara to discuss the upcoming release of *Toy Story 5*.

Radio 2 says the new programme will feature familiar elements from Sara’s popular afternoon show alongside brand-new features created specifically for breakfast listeners. Audience interaction is expected to play a major role, with guests regularly joining Sara in the studio.

Matt shared his excitement after finally being able to reveal his new role.

Writing on Instagram, he said: “Thrilled to finally be able to spill the beans and tell you I’ll be joining a stellar cast of Sara Cox, Ellie Brennan and the fantastic production team as your newsreader on the new breakfast show next month.

“Big (and very stylish) shoes to fill – wish me luck. See you on the 6th!”

The appointment was warmly welcomed by Radio 2 colleagues. Former Breakfast Show presenter Zoe Ball commented: “Fantastic news Matthew ❤️”, while OJ Borg added: “Mate this is wicked! You were wicked when we did breakfast together.”

The new show will be produced by Patrick Thomas, who worked with Scott Mills, and Anthony Dunning, who worked for Steve Wright.
