Is Gary working beside her?
An anonymous listener, disguised with a voice changer and called Dave for the conversation, suspects that a new colleague may be Unlucky Gary. The evidence is that he has mentioned being dumped at an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, an unusually specific misfortune that listeners already know from Gary’s story.
Scott suggests testing him with Gary’s old on-air alias, “Gary Bint”. The listener calls the name across the office twice, but the colleague shows no sign of recognition. The investigation therefore ends without proof, although the coincidence remains suspicious.
Scott and Chris must keep straight faces
Funny Business challenges Scott and Chris to telephone companies with amusing names while behaving as though nothing is unusual. The calls include a canine reproduction business called Fit and Fertile, Gay’s Creamery and Pussy Galore Cattery. Every perfectly normal response from the people answering makes it harder for the pair to explain their invented enquiries without laughing.
The game depends on treating the names with complete seriousness, and the strain becomes obvious as each call continues. Scott and Chris discover that the politest possible business conversation can be the most difficult one to finish.
Pokémon takes over the studio
Chris has become absorbed in Pokémon Go, to Scott’s irritation, and continues playing around the BBC. Scott threatens to confiscate his phone if the distraction does not stop. Dev’s Real or No Real includes a story about Pokémon appearing on stage during a Dua Lipa performance, which is true, alongside claims involving James Bay’s entourage and a fresh prediction of catastrophe.
The day’s Road to the Final film is also available on BBC iPlayer, allowing Scott and Chris to relive the commentary adventure while Chris begins a very different obsession.
