17 March 2016: The first Scott Mills Bridge reviews arrive

The morning after Fleet

Robbie, who attended the opening, confirmed that Chris’s speech sounded impressive even without the emotional music heard by radio listeners. He also contributed to the slightly thin applause and watched a youth football team descend the stairs one player at a time, creating the appearance of the same person repeatedly emerging from a glitch.

Chris replayed the most dramatic part of his speech with its music restored. He remained proud of the line about millions of people driving underneath Scott or courageously going through him, while the command to Rod to open the curtains had already become the programme’s favourite moment.

Voice of the reviews

The bridge had quickly accumulated online reviews, so the former Voice of the Tweets returned to read them with suitable gravity. It was described as modern architecture at its finest, a sacred point where north and south lived in peace, and a structure sturdy enough to remain safe under frost.

One review claimed that a person never walked across the bridge twice because the experience changed them before they reached the other side. Others complained of wind, a lost hat, its distinctive smell and the lack of displays celebrating Scott’s greatest moments. Two one-star ratings prevented a perfect score, including one from the listener whose 21st birthday had been overshadowed by the opening.

Chris admitted that the walkway itself was cold, functional and in need of decoration. Scott accepted responsibility for improvements and suggested heaters, while hoping the reviews would lift it above the local service-station restaurant as Fleet’s leading attraction.

Bring back Bingo

Listeners hearing old suggestive clips realised how much they missed Innuendo Bingo. Scott said the game remained on hiatus but agreed to discuss its future, with Martin Solveig’s familiar theme increasing the pressure for a return.

The show also discovered Ollie’s habit of taking a “great ideas” notebook and IKEA pencil on nights out. Chris remembered a friend who carried binoculars to inspect queues at the far end of Watford town centre, providing the next day with an entire new category of night-out equipment.
