Luke Friend brings the hair
Luke Friend visited with his new single “Hole in My Heart” and described settling into London after The X Factor. His social life included a pub quiz and bingo with other young performers, a suitably quiet contrast with the image of instant pop stardom.
He then faced Matt Edmondson in Innuendo Bingo. Luke emptied his pockets, removed his belt and worried about what the water would do to his famously substantial hair. Matt, already familiar with the game, offered no sympathy.
Clips included an arts discussion about a “large erection”, Alastair Campbell suggesting a political three-way involving Nick Clegg and an advert asking why anybody would do only half a job with their mouth. The players also revisited Emilie Sande’s reference to Fearne Cotton’s slot and the programme’s collection of wet cookery clips.
Luke emerged thoroughly soaked but delighted that his song had been played twice during the week. Scott judged the chaotic game a success, while Luke’s fans immediately demanded the video.
Has Scott cheated on Chris?
Holly’s appearances as Chris’s temporary replacement had attracted suspicion. A caller accused Scott of behaving like the gym buddies discussed the previous day, quietly finding somebody new while his regular partner was away.
Chris joined the joke on Twitter and said he felt cheated on. Scott rejected the complaint, pointing out that Chris regularly worked with other presenters whenever he was absent. Holly had only supplied useful material and helped play a game, although her willingness to return every day made the defence less convincing.
Zane Lowe’s final fact-check
Zane Lowe joined on his last day at Radio 1 to settle stories previously used in Real or No Real. He confirmed that he had been part of the New Zealand hip-hop group Urban Disturbance and had once broken a rib while presenting with such physical enthusiasm that somebody else had to take over.
Other memories were less reliable. Zane rejected the claim that he saved the life of the Cribs’ Ryan Jarman, but had forgotten Ricky Wilson arriving for a Christmas programme in a shopping trolley until his producer confirmed it. He also established which celebrity encounters and elaborate outside broadcasts had genuinely happened during his years at the station.
The feature ended more sincerely. Scott praised Zane’s ability to play records, conduct interviews and make every broadcast sound fresh. Zane returned the compliment and followed Scott on Twitter during the programme, producing an immediate notification on Scott’s phone.
Listeners and artists used the hashtag #ThanksZane before his final evening show. The accumulated messages made clear that his departure was bigger than an ordinary schedule change.
