2 June 2008: Scott Pretends to Be on the Phone, Plus American Newsreader’s Awkward Passion

Scott is caught red-handed pretending to be on a phone call in a pub toilet, leading to a hilarious new quiz. Plus, an American newsreader gets uncomfortably theatrical while reading out explicit text messages between Detroit’s mayor and his chief of staff.

The show opens with Scott promoting his “My Name is Scott” video featuring an egg roulette challenge with Dave Pearce, encouraging listeners to visit his page on the BBC website. The real drama comes when Beccy reveals that Scott was caught in the pub the previous night walking out of the toilet while apparently on a phone call — except he wasn’t actually talking to anyone. Scott admits he does this regularly to avoid conversations with friends, even in social situations. The team launches a new quiz: “He’s on the Phone. Or Is He?” where listeners are invited to test Scott’s deception by grabbing his phone if they spot him in the street.

A caller named Danny also confesses to the same habit, and the conversation turns to the practicalities of fake phone calls — what happens if your actual phone rings while you’re pretending? Scott keeps his on silent, which he argues is perfectly normal.

The show then shifts to an American news clip in which a newsreader dramatically reads out sexually explicit text messages exchanged between Detroit’s mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff Christine Beatty. The newsreader becomes increasingly theatrical and emotionally invested in the messages, adding dramatic pauses, sighing deeply, and replacing “LOL” with emphatic “Ahas.” The contrast between the serious news format and his theatrical delivery is comedy gold — “You don’t get this with Fiona Bruce, dear.”

The show closes with Barryoke, featuring a caller named Barry.
