11 October 2007: Chappers and Laura’s Birthday, Louis Walsh Crashes, Mel C Guest

A chaotic birthday special featuring Chappers and Laura’s on-air celebration, complete with Laura’s ultimatum for an engagement ring by 10 a.m., an uninvited Louis Walsh phoning in, and special guest Mel C attempting to navigate an awkward reunion with her longtime manager.

The show opens with Laura’s birthday demands: she received a bracelet from her boyfriend James instead of the engagement ring she’d hinted at (with specific catalog selections), issuing him a 10 a.m. deadline before she’ll “say yes to other deals.” The team plays her admiring emails, including one from an American listener named Daniel from Virginia who offers himself as an alternative. Meanwhile, Scott announces he’s editing the Daily Star’s gossip column and is on the hunt for celebrity scoops.

Lloyd, a young caller, sends in birthday messages for both Chappers and Laura via the “Matt Dustyman Game” — a feature where listeners Bluetooth recordings into crowded places (buses, pubs) to catch unsuspecting reactions. Lloyd performs it on his school bus to good effect.

Louis Walsh phones in uninvited, claiming he’s “on the way” to the studio because they “need somebody to be honest” after yesterday’s farting guest (Chris Once, aka Mr. Methane). Scott warns him that their booked guest might beat him up — it’s Mel C from the Spice Girls. Louis insists there’s “no war” and he and Mel C get along fine.

Michael, who played piano in Kylie Minogue’s “Two Hearts” video after being spotted at a fashion week event, calls in with minimal gossip (just that Kylie was wearing Gucci). Mel C arrives as the main guest and discusses the Spice Girls’ upcoming O2 residency, carefully avoiding giving away setlist details. She denies reports of in-fighting over solo slots and plays coy about competition with Westlife. Scott gets her to admit one piece of gossip: that one band member “used to be a man” (though the conversation becomes muddled). They also discuss her new single and a mock charity campaign called “Make Headlice History” that sprang up after mishearing its title.

The show features Japanese F-Cup cookies (designed to increase breast size through trans fats), and Mel C reluctantly tries one. Louis finally arrives in studio and awkwardly attempts to make peace with Mel C, though the dynamic remains tense. The episode ends with the 10 o’clock engagement ring deadline arriving — James hasn’t delivered, and Laura is officially “dumped.”
