7 August 2007: Lindsay Lohan Driving People Out of Hollywood

Scott discovers a real property advertisement from Los Angeles that explicitly markets homes as an escape from Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears — proof that the young actress’s celebrity status is literally affecting the housing market.

This episode centres on the running feature of answerphone messages left on the “Flirt Divert” number, a prank line Scott encourages listeners to hand out to people they want to wind up on nights out. The team plays through various voicemails, including one from someone claiming to be Sean Connery, which sparks debate about whether it’s actually the actor or just a very committed impression. There’s also discussion of drunk callers becoming more attractive as the night progresses, and various other amusing and cringe-worthy messages.

The main talking point, however, is a genuine radio advertisement Scott found running on Los Angeles stations. A property developer for Porter Ranch is actively marketing new homes by explicitly promising buyers an escape from the paparazzi, tabloid reporters, and “insane teenage movie stars” — specifically name-checking Lindsay Lohan, along with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. The advert emphasises that Porter Ranch offers the luxury of Beverly Hills without the 24-hour media circus those celebrities attract. Scott finds this hilarious evidence that Lindsay Lohan’s notoriety has become so intense it’s actually driving people away from areas where she might be spotted, to the point where property companies are using “Lindsay Lohan avoidance” as a genuine selling point.
