5 January 2007: Viral Text Messages and Gaydar Challenge

Scott and the team attempt to create their own viral text message to rival the “eight angels” and “thump hard” chain messages that went around Christmas, and Chappers takes a gaydar test to see how well he can spot whether callers are gay or straight.

The show opens with Scott discussing Kylie Minogue’s concert performance the previous night, praising her talent while critiquing some of her costume choices. This leads into a discussion of viral text messages that have been circulating, including the “eight angels” message promising good news and the “thump hard” one. Scott proposes that listeners create their own viral text by sending a message he’ll provide to just two people each, theoretically spreading it across the country organically. The team gets around 3,000 positive responses from listeners willing to participate in the experiment.

The show then features a segment where listeners call in with unwanted Christmas gifts they want to get rid of. One caller, Corey, reveals his mum gave him complimentary toiletries from a Hong Kong hotel she’d stayed in, wrapped up nicely to seem more expensive. Scott arranges for Corey and his boss Helen to destroy the unwanted items using a drill at their workplace (Laura Ashley in Cheltenham), which they do on air while customers look on in bemusement. Corey’s mum is listening online and finds the stunt amusing rather than upsetting.

Later, Chappers participates in a gaydar challenge after admitting he didn’t realize a Big Brother contestant was gay. Scott sets up a game where Chappers asks three callers one question each to determine whether they’re gay or straight. The three participants are Rob (26, likes DIY and cooking), Amy (24, likes action films), and James (26, who turns out to be Laura’s boyfriend). Chappers gets mixed results, successfully identifying Amy as straight but misjudging both the men.
