25 October 2006: Laura’s Diary – Devil Messages and a Poem of Pain

Laura’s emotional diary continues as she deals with her boyfriend Ben saying another girl’s name in his sleep, leading to a deeply felt (if occasionally clumsy) poem about jealousy, heartbreak, and the fear of losing him.

This episode features the continuation of the “Laura’s Diary” feature, with Mary Foxy returning to read the latest instalment. Laura writes about overhearing Ben mention a girl called Charlotte in his sleep — the second time he’s done it — sending her into a spiral of jealousy and suspicion. She fixates on the idea that Charlotte has somehow manipulated or “poisoned” Ben’s mind, and wrestles with whether to confront him or stay silent for fear the relationship might end.

Rather than simply venting, Laura channels her distress into a poem. It’s a heartfelt, if earnest, piece about feeling distant from Ben while keeping him always in her thoughts, worrying she’s not enough for him, and fearing temptation will pull him away. The poem touches on darker thoughts too — wondering if there’s a “hidden love” or even a child involved — before concluding with a desperate assertion that she’s willing to fight for the relationship and be his woman if he’ll let her.

The show pokes gentle fun at Laura’s poetry. Scott and the team suggest the rhyming is a bit awkward in places, though Chris defends it by arguing that poems should rhyme — that non-rhyming poems are “rubbish.” Laura herself acknowledges the poetry isn’t perfect, but insists it was a genuine way of getting her feelings out on the page, and she didn’t expect it to be read out on air to thousands of listeners. The diary feature remains a comedic highlight of the show, balancing real teenage emotion with the absurdity of airing it all publicly.
