16 October 2006: Laura’s Diary Season 5 Final and American Phone Book Game

Laura’s Diary returns for its final season, with Mary reading entries from 1998 when Ben unexpectedly came back into Laura’s life after dumping her by letter — and the show plays the American phone book game, phoning unsuspecting Americans with unusual surnames.

This episode marks the fifth and final season of Laura’s Diary, the popular recurring feature that began when Mary discovered her sister Laura’s old diaries. The entry from 11 August 1998 finds Ben back in the picture after the summer holidays, having reconciled with Laura despite his earlier decision to end their long-distance relationship while she was at university. The diary entry focuses on Ben visiting and taking a shower at Laura’s family home in York, which irritates her father — who feels it’s intrusive. Laura vents about her dad’s hypocrisy, noting he complains about the situation while sprawling about in his night shirts. Her father’s current complaint is that Laura treats the house like a hotel, to which she responds that she wouldn’t be there if she had a choice, as she’ll be moving to Glasgow soon. Mary also appears on the show, and Scott and the team gently tease her about having had a crush on Ben, referencing a card she’d made for him decorated with hearts and signed “Love from Fox Mary” — a nickname from her childhood when she was obsessed with foxes and wanted to be one (complete with an Ace Ventura impression).

After the diary segment, the show plays the American Phone Book Game, where they call random Americans from an online phone directory and ask them to confirm their names. Early that morning they phoned a woman named Mrs Bummer (wife of Roger), who was understandably not pleased to be called at an unsociable hour.
