  1. I was thinking about why it had added so many listeners and I agree, I think its due to Cara and AP Chris, and also Chris Stark. There just seems to be a whole load of new energy, ideas and excellent guests.

  2. As far as I'm aware, yes. He mentions it in his autobiography. Also during AAA headcam, Chris did a Q&A on twitter during a couple of songs where Scott was having a fresh air break. My question was how many "fresh air breaks" does Scott have during 1 show? and the answer was 2 or 3! He arrived back into the studio about 2 seconds before the record ended, they were just trying to make a plan for which record to play if he didnt walk back in again!

  3. WEEKDAYS

Dev: Unless I'm working a nightshift I dont generally get an oppertunity to listen to Dev so cant really pass much comment on him. I neither like him or dislike him really. Just sounds so nasal!

Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw: I think Grimmy has had a hard time of late. I dont think his features are fantastic, but him and his team, as presenters are really funny and engaging. I acutally think his best link is his one at 6:45 where he just chats utter rubbish. Its really brillant radio. They dont have any guests in or have to do any corperate bollocks, its just him chattng to the listener. Often an overlooked part of his show and actually shows what a natural he is at radio. I know all the publicity and scrutiny come as part of the package of being the Breakfast show host, but just let the show grow and then comment on it. Its not fair to judge it straight after someone has just left the role after 8.5 years. I think he was a perfect choice for the new role.

Sara Cox (covering Fearne): Sara is fantastic and a incredible broadcaster. Her experience shows, as she is fantastic at the job. But with experience, comes longeivity, and unfortunately thats not what Radio 1 want. I think she must know as well as everyone that once Fearne is back, there is no slot for her, which is a crying shame.

Scott Mills: I do enjoy listening to Scott, and like Sara, he is a natural broadcaster but with the loss of Beccy and TOTDS its lacking something slightly. Beccy was a perfect contributer and I gueininly think she was one of the funniest people, if not the funniest person on radio. When she chipped in on 24 years at the tap end sometimes I would just be crying with laughter in my car, so for the show to lose her, is a massive loss. Saying that, I have warmed to Chris and think he's a welcome addition, but its difficult to match Beccy Huxtable. I remember once, when Beccy was off, they had Rihanna contribute to 24 years at the tap end and it was such god awful radio. Thank god that never happened again. I think they realised as much of a mistake it was! Even though losing Beccy is a massive blow for the team, I wish her all the best though and see from her twitter that her MS is improving, which is fantastic news.

Another thing I have noticed is I dont think they have enough listeners on the show. The days when they have no guests on, they just have Chris play real or no real on his own. It just seems lazy and pointless.

Greg James: It is just palpable how much Greg James enjoys his job and hes a pleaure to listen to. His features are well thought out and he knows what he is talking about when he is speaking about music, because like Grimmy he is actually going out to experience it. Also things like Camp Bastion and the Zambezi challenge were fantastic and really showed what a fantastic guy Greg is.

Radio 1 need to employ more people like Greg who have a guenuine passion for music and for radio and actually humble people. Basically the opposite of Jameela Jamil. I made a post about it before, but there must be so much untapped talent in student radio and radio 1 just doesnt seem to want to look there any more. Its such a shame.

Phil Taggart & Alice Levine: (I'm going to copy exactly what aws said before, beacuse I agree with it all!) --- Out of all the new shows, this is the one that has surprised me the most. I wasn't sure about Alice at first, but she's become a radio natural. It's been great hearing both of them cover for other people recently, and I can see them doing really well. They've got a good show with good music and great features. I know it has been mentioned on here about Alice taking over Fearne's slot in the future. I'm guessing the original idea would be to replace Fearne with Gemma or Jameela, but Alice would be a better option. Overall, I like these two. They've got a really good show here.

    WEEKENDS

Gemma Cairney: Its very rare that I cant listen to some of the daytime shows and this is one of those. I gave her a chance and its such painful listening that I just listen to a Scott Mills Daily now in the car instead of that.

The Matt Edmondson Show: (Agree with all of this, this show is literally the only thing worth listening to at weekends) Out of all the ex-T4 presenters, he is definitely the best by far. A fun show that reminds me a bit of Scott's. Possibly a contender to replace Scott in two years? Maybe Matt with Chris in the afternoons? This show is definitely a gem in a rather average weekend line-up.

Huw Stevens: I don't mind Huw, but I definitely think he is suited for a specialist show more. Also, don't always use Huw for cover, there are other DJ's that deserve a chance! I don't love Huw's show, but I don't dislike it either. I'll listen, but I'm not that bothered if I miss it.

Chart Show with Jameela Jamil: I think its more her personality but I used to love the Chart show and just dont bother listening any more. She is incredibly self obsessed and irritating and it just makes for uncomfortable radio. Combined with the fact that she was so terrible at driving the desk when doing the request show (due to a non-radio background) that she doesnt even do that any more. The whole show is painfully scripted and just very unnatural. When Jameela interviews pop stars I actaully feel a bit embarrassed. The way she manages to wangle every question about them back at herself is quite incredible. She doesnt have the raw interviewing skills that other Radio 1 presenters have who come from radio backgrounds. She cant even hold a microphone correctly when interviewing!

Dan & Phil: Epitomises everything I cant bear about the new talent they are brining in. I think the show is aimed at a lot younger age group then me, and as far as I'm aware, I think that timeslot has the youngest age of listenership so thats probably only fair. And probably a reason why I dont listen. Like Jameela, it seems quite scripted and try hard but in their defense, I like how they can actually drive the desk and are good at it. But insead of intersting interviews with artists at R1BW they are pratting around doing stupid stuff. Probably what Dan & Phils fanbase want, but is it really how Radio 1 want to be viewed by the artists management?

  4. I was lukewarm towards Jameela before, but being paired up with Scott only serves to highlight all her shortcomings. She's abrasive in the interviews, hogs the mike and puts no thought in what she yammers on. Pair that up with a weak sense of humour and internalized misogyny in her comments - she went from meh to really, really annoying in just two days time for me.

This is very well put. Radio 1's latest recruits, with the exception of Alice Levine, have been seriously poor. I would consider myself a seriously dedicated Radio 1 fan, and cannot listen to any of the new shows from Dan & Phil / Jameela.

I think it was Phil the other day who called himself a 'DJ' and it made me cringe slightly, because they really arent. It actually makes a mockery of the job. They are, for want of a better word, external talent who have been brought into a radio broadcasting role, and it really shows in their lack of skill of broadasting and ettiquette.

If you read Scotts autobiography, you will see the enormous amount of effort he put in to eventually land up at Radio 1, from doing hospital radio to numerous different radio stations, and actually having to proove to numerous people he is worthy of a job at Radio 1, brining with it a wealth of experience, and I'm sure we can all agree, he deserves it, and is an absolutely class broadcaster.

There must be such a wide source of incredible talent coming out of universities, who have actually shown a genuine interest in radio, and do it at university, and are passionate about music and can slot straight into a fresh role at Radio 1 much like Greg James did back in 2007. Radio 1 are all about new music etc, and there is Nick, Greg, Phil Taggart talking about the gigs they have been to on their show the next day. What is Jammela doing? Talking about herself. What are Dan and Phil doing? Making stupid videos.

I can see what Radio 1 have done, and see why they have done it: they want to draw in a younger audience, so bring all the 15 year old fan girls in from Dan and Phil and all the guys who fancy Jameela. But I guess the compromise is they have to lose their mantra of "In New Music We Trust" because that certainly isnt any part of their ethos.

Radio 1 can continue to take this direction, but I'm just going to have to step off the bandwagon...

  5. Doesn't look like it I'm afraid. Phil Taggart seems to be the main stand in at weekends now,and Pete Allison stood in for Dev when he took a week off,so looks like Tom Deacons not going to be on Radio One at all from now on :(

Horray! Its about time they got people like Pete Allison in. There is something about the way Tom Deacon speaks that I really cant stand.

  6. Unfortunately Tom Deacon's show has been axed by Radio One.I've no idea why b ut wed april 3 was definately his last ever show.I was listening.Maybe he wanted to go on the comedy circuit full time or something

Did he mention it at all on the show that it was going to be his last one? Will he not be subsituting any more either? We can only hope!

  7. Radio 1 was always going to have a tough time of it: When Scott leaves which I think is inevitable in a couple of years over a 5 year period some really big names will have left: Jo Whiley, Moyles, Coxy and Mills. Unfortunately at the moment the replacements (possibly bar Grimmy) are sub-standard.

You've made a good point there. They are all absolutely class broadcasters. Will be certainly dropping a peg or two in talent when they all go.

And as you say, I know Grimmy doesnt float everyones boats, but he had big boots to fill and hes doing an excellent job of it. Of all the decisions of moving presenters around, that was the best decision for a mile.

Now I have sneaky suspicions that Radio 1 management actually read these forums, so please take note of peoples opinions! :)

  8. Its really interesting to hear everyones opinions. I think the most successful DJs are, like you mention above, the ones who its been a passion of there's since a young age. Look at Moyles, Mills, Greg and Grimmy. There is a reason they have/have had those slots. It's because they started getting experience, at some hospital radio station when they were 13. Grimmy and Greg are so current and on trend, not only do they have significant experience behind them prior to radio 1 and chosen it as a career from the get go, they also enjoy gigs which R1 is playlisting.

I actaully find the Chart show quite uncomfortable to listen to. Its so heavily scripted and forced, there is no natural flow to it. Also due to all the blunders she used to make driving the desk, she now doesnt even do that now! I think this is what happens when you take someone who R1 think the listeners want, from a different career and put them infront of a radio mic, the inexperience really shines through, and they have to resort to measures like scripting their entire show for them. Dan and Phil also seems substantially scripted from what I can tell, but at least they drive the desk.

Part of why I enjoy radio is just having the presenters ramble off topic about something and being a bit edgy, and I dont think Im the only one who thinks this?

Having said this, I occasionally catch the 10-12 show with Phil and Alice, and even though Alice isnt from a radio background, I think she is a natural. I dont think she drives the desk though so minus points for that, Alice!

In summary, I think Radio 1 are really missing a trick. They seem too focussed on recruiting from relative fame, and completely missing the obvious talent that must be from Student Radio, who are no only in target age group and can talk about relevant content in their links, and also probably have a strong interest in music. As far as I'm aware, the last person they took on from student radio was Greg in 2007?! Feel free to correct me! I listened to Pete Allison, Hattie Pearson and Ethan O'Leary and thought they were really good acutally - especially Pete.

  9. I agree with Merlin, I can really see Matt moving to weekdays in a few years time.

I'm pleased other people agree that there is nothing more harrowing then waking up at a weekend to the sound of Gemma Cairney. It just grates right through me. When either her or Rhianna from films is on Innuendo Bingo, I have to switch over!

And dont get me started on Jameela Jamil...

  10. I'm really enjoying his weekend show actually. He's the only one I can actually tolerate out of the weekend line up.

I dont know why, I just dont get Dev. And I'm not awake before 6:30, so thankfully dont have to hear him, so dont really mind if he stays there!
