  1. I wasn't thinking of that, and I can't imagne that happening either. But I think if Moyles and Mills will have left, Radio 1 will sound completely different. Without these two, and Whiley, there's not much left on Radio 1 that makes me want to tune in. I don't know who's going to be brought in, but judged by recent additions to the DJ-team, I don't expect too much...

And if I don't listen to Radio 1 anymore, 6music iy probably going to be my choice.

I'm not exactly 15 any more, you know ;)

  2. In 2011, Moyles' and Mills' contracts run out, and 6music will carry on broadcasting from 2011 onwards. Nice coincidence there.

(I am assuming that both contracts are not being renewed, and I think it is highly unlikely that Mills or Moyles will still be on their current slots in late 2011...)

  3. To me it seems she is leaving voluntarily. Her posting sounds positive about upcoming stuff and content with her work at Radio 1. If she had been pushed, she probably wouldn't have posted something on myspace before the BBC press office had published something. And it would sound differently...

  4. i'm leaving BBC Radio1.... thank you so much for listening.... full statement here: www.myspace.com/maryannehobbs
Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs is to leave the station after 14 years. The DJ, who presents a dance and dubstep show between 2am and 4am on Thursdays, will present her last show on 9 September. She is joining the University of Sheffield to mentor and teach students on its radio, TV station and newspaper.

I can't say I listened to many of her shows - they were simply too experimental for my liking... But I remember her doing 20 mins of early breakfast when Greg James was late. Excellent stuff, I liked her voice and her presentng style. And she's been on Radio 1 for 14 years - an incredible achievement.

So - Maryanne Hobbs leaving, Annie Nightingale's new project...

  5. Moyles will stay for another year!

Evening all. I might treat myself to a few drinks tonight as it's warm and the contract at work is now done. 12 more months of early starts!

brilliant news. And it will be really interesting to see what happens next year when both Moyles's and Mills's contracts run out. Radio 1 will probably see the biggest changes in years...

But I'm really happy to see that R1 will be about the same for another year.

  6. Seriously though, I hear Scott and Greg being trailed too on daytime radio, so no, Fearne is NOT the only show being trailed, just that the others are done in different ways.

I am not aware of that. But even if you're right, their trailers are not as long as Fearne's. They do a bit of cros promotion all the time, but until last week, the only shows that got long ad in the programme were Moyles and the specialist shows.

Also are you suggesting by connection that Moyles is doing badly if they also feel the need to mainly advertise him? After all, by that logic, why trail his show otherwise? :doubt:

Moyles is being promoted because the breakfast show is the most prestigious and important show on any radio station. And probably the most expansive one. That's why they advertise it. But I really don't get why Zane Lowe, for example, plays out ad for the Moyles show. These ads always seem misplaced in Zane's show.
  7. Thing is, the only daytime show that is advertised on other shows is The Chris Moyles show. All other adverts are for specialist programmes or events. So I think probably Fearne isn't doing too welll compared to the other daytime shows. Otherwise there would be no need to run ads for her show.

The Live Lounge bit is probably just in the ad in order to tell listeners that Fearne isn't just doing stupid chat, but that she also has other things to provide. (To be fair, the Live Lounge is the best radio feature ever invented, in my opinion).

Apart from the Live Lounge, what bits has Fearne's show got that could be interesting for listeners? None, in my eyes...

    (Fearne hater, me...)

  8. True, Chart and playlist are a bit too big. What just comes to my mind: I also don't like the new schedule page that much. The old one with a table showing monday to sunday instead of just one day provided much better information. Maybe change the DJs and shows page into that direction?

Also, there's many colours in the top bit of the homepage. Orange, green, black, purple, the flash bit...a bit too much for my liking.

That said, if it sounds as if I hated it, I don't. Just some points I don't like that much.

  9. Yes, what on earth could the common link be on the DJs and Shows page?

If that is a rhetorical question: I know what the common link is, by I think it is not the best thing they could have come up with. It's confusing to see Tom Deacon in the same section as Westwood. Even though there is a common link.

  10. The new DJs & Shows page is a bit weird. Tom Decon, Annie and Nick and Aled in the same bit with the likes of Fabio and Grooverider. These shows don't have much in common apart from beoing broadcast at night. Unlike the daytime shows, which all have a similair format.

  11. So how much of the tracks do they pick usually on Radio One?
    Zero.

There's the playlist, and a music departement at Radio 1, and this departement decides which songs are played in which order. They make sure that there are not three RnB tracks in a row. A-list tracks in hot rotation are played every three to four hours, approximately.

Listening to Jo Whiley, I gat the feeling that she has a bit more influence on what to play on her show, it sounds different from Radio 1's usual sound.

In some shows, DJs might get to pick a track that would not normally be played, as a sort of feature. For example, I think Scott played the German eurovision song on his show without it being in the playlist. He talked about the funny lyrics, then played the track. But most of the time, the DJs get told what to play and don't have any influence on what to play.

  12. Correct, there does seem to be a hatred for Germany here, it sounds to me like a lot of daft racists living 60 year old History because whatever Germany wins, there's always idiots here who refuse to give them any credit for anything and even make accusations of cheating

Just to make this clear, I don't really feel hated by people from other European countries because of being German. If discussions come to the war, 1966 or whatever else I think that there is lots of irony going on and people don't actually mean what they say - so don't care if people go on about those things.

As for political voting: yes, it is still happening, but it affects those on top more than those on the bottom side. Even if you give 8, 10 and 12 point to your neighbours, there's still all the other point left to give - to countries with decent entries. Germany got 12 points about 5 times I think, many countries gave us 3, 4 or 5 points...

If you manage to get int the top 5, you've done a very good job. the rest is luck, and political voting. It's very hard to create a song that people all over Europe and in the Midde East and Asia like. Norway did it last year - I hated the song ;)

But with a good entry, the UK good end up in the top 5. France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland to name but a few would vote for the UK rather than for Serbia, Russia or Azerbaijan - if the UK had a good entry.

Germany ended up on the bottom half during the last years. This time, we got a famous TV-guy doing an X-factor style show. Result: Lena got 3 songs in the top 5 of the German charts - something that has never been achieved before in Germany.

  13. the rest of the EU hate the UK (= fact)
That's because you lost the war in Iraq. Oh wait. We lost THE war.

First, it is not true that the rest of Europe hate the UK, and second, Germany isn't the most-loved country either. It is still about music, mainly. The german song was doing very well in the german charts and parts of northern and eastern europe, so although I would not have thought that we won, I thought that we would do alright with Lena.

As for the UK, the song was just - bad. Boring, average plastic pop stuff. Did it even enter the Top40? Don't think so. It was just not good.

When Lloyd Webber wrote the single last year, you did pretty well. That was because someone who actually knew how to arrange a piece of music professionally (and I mean professionally, not on a "I know how to get pop beats out of a computer"-basis) worked on the entry.

I would never have guessed that Germany wins. I thought getting in the top 5 would have been a huge success. Now we won, but did Turkey or Denmark lose just because they didn't become first? I don't think so. Their songs were good, they got points from all over Europe. The UK's entry, and most people in the UK seem to have realised, just wasn't good, so it didn't get points.

  14. Next year's changes might be slightly more interesting. Scott's contract is running out, Moyles will probably get a year-long contract this year and might also go next year; they will probably send Edith and Jo away if they don't already do it this year. The Deacon/Edmondson era is starting. Radio 2, here I come. Or someone better save 6music...

  15. Long weekend with my boys in Germany, week in Bangor with Moyles & Co next week..oh, and half a million new listeners to the show. Happy boy
    (Greg's twitter).

But seriously, Moyles is the man! He simply must get a new contract with these figures. Others survive a year or two, but Moyles is at his best after seven years. Congrats and respect!

  16. Simply an observation, but I just find it interesting that Barry Norman, Johnathan Ross and Claudia Winkleman are all Jewish and either hail from, or live in North London. That's all.
The North London thing is because North London is popular with wealthy/media/wealthy media people. Edith and Moyles live their, too.
