  1. This show is supposed to be all about the music.
Historically it is, but there's nothing to say this should continue. I much prefer Jo, but I think Fearne has to make the show her own. When she settles down and finds her groove, it should make quite a good listen.
  2. He's back on again this week. I guess they record them on Monday afternoons.

I think the favourite thing was a bit tedious on the blog because it meant the quality was lowered of posts.

Good to hear Neil behind the microphone today, Greg's even interrupting the news a bit today which is good to hear. A lot less 'stiff' this week - awful word though!

I don't like the Peter Dickson things. They're really irritating and trying too hard to be random. Greg is sounding good though. Only thing is, I dunno why he pre-records so much. All the interviews with the 'experts' (sport, gaming etc) are on tape, as are the calls from listeners. It takes some of the spontaneity away.
  3. Couple of changes to the show today. Greg seems to have dropped the Peter Dickson voiceovers into Newsbeat. And, unless I'm mistaken, his favourite thing of the day seems to have gone too. Dunno if he mentioned it. He's starting to settle in now, and the show's finding its feet. It's not like anything else on Radio 1, it's quite topical and random. I like it.

  4. has anyone else noticed that the music now played on Greg's show is a lot different to when Edith was on ?

it seems a lot more pop & much more like the music you get on the crap commercial stations.

That's simply not true. Greg plays the playlist. So did Edith. In fact he gets more free spots than she did because he does the 10 minute takeover.
  5. Another thing about the ratings is that Nihal keeps interrupting their opinions to get their percentage.

Overall I think they probably have too many songs in the hour, perhaps they should stick to the big 5 releases of the week. Also, a bit of film, TV or book discussion wouldn't go amiss, just to add a bit of variety.

And Nihal needs to calm down.

But overall I'd give the show 63%...

  6. I found it funny. I guess it's that marmite opinion of Nihal there. I actually have found Speech Debelle quite arrogant.

You might be right here. There's something about the ratings that doesn't work and you might be right about scrapping it. The idea is the best one is played tomorrow on Greg's show.

Ah I see, not a bad idea. Maybe a mark out of 10 would be better then. I don't get how you can distinguish between say 71 and 72%. Nihal's OK, I just think he needs to calm down a bit. He's actually a really good broadcaster, but he should just be himself rather than feeling the need to be funny or clever all the time.
  7. Trouble with Nihal is he always seems to try too hard. Speech Debelle was just trying to make a serious point and he kept interrupting her with lame jokes. No need! I like the concept of the show, but why not try and be serious, just for an hour? I'm not asking for a Radio 4 style show, but young people won't tune out just because they hear something mildly intelligent.

I also think the rating system is unecessary. If the reviewers make their point well enough, there shouldn't be any need for them to come up with a random percentage.

  8. I don't mind Fearne, and although she's no Jo I haven't minded the show so far though. But I just heard the Moyles handover this morning on the iPlayer. How awkward! Moyles was on top form and made some really quick one liners. But they seemed to go straight over Fearne's head, because she just ignored them and moved on really quickly. Generally she's been OK, but I worry for Radio 1 if every slot is filled with people like her in a few years time. It's really losing its edge.

  9. Wow, and to think Alan was worried Greg would be the one with no ideas. A huge shame about this show so far. Proof as ever the station is only interested in age and not entertainment. I will keep listening though and decide properly on Friday.
Out of interest Jono, what haven't you liked? I've quite enjoyed Fearne so far...
  10. The difference between him and Evans is simply that Evans was one of the first people to do the show that he did in this country, and sadly Moyles may end up being the last - very sad, and I genuinely fear for R1's future when he's gone because I don't think their view of what a DJ should be completely holds up with what made Moyles and the station a success in the first place.
Totally agree M1TCH3LL. I think he's the last great DJ this country will see, at least for a while. While Scott and Greg are both great, I'm doubtful that they could have built up such a loyal audience at breakfast. I think he is the best - he's the voice of this generation. But people were probably saying that about Tony Blackburn 40 years ago.
  11. Quite a geeky post, but here goes... Have the 1tros now entirely disappeared from BBC Radio 1? I didn't hear any over the weekend, but I assumed that was because of the Reading and Leeds promotion. But Scott's not using them this morning either. Anyone got the inside track? It does sound slightly bland without them.

  12. BBC Switch and the coverage it gets. The daily trails of Nick Grimshaw also piss me off as Colin never got any promotions but he does.
I think it's probably because they see Nick Grimshaw as a rising star, and a potential future daytime host, so they want to build his profile and the audience's awareness of him. Whereas Colin was not your typical Radio 1 show, and his career at the station didn't really have anywhere else to go. I must admit, after a shaky start, I'm really liking Grimmy's show now.
  13. I think the show was sounding lazy for a while. But perhaps the reports of him getting the push from breakfast have given him a kick up the backside, because I agree, he's sounding great lately. The Wimbledon thing with Carrie this week was superb, the team are working well, and even Cheggers' Pop Quiz is starting to sound good.

  14. Yakkk that sounds AWFUL! I'm not just saying it because it's new- it ACTUALLY sounds terrible
I don't think it sounds terrible, in fact it sounds OK, but it makes Radio 1 sound younger (too young in my opinion) and also it doesn't make it sound very 'big' or authoritative. You wouldn't know by listening to the jingles that it's got 11 million listeners.
  15. I find Nihals shows very easy going and listener friendly. Lots of random ramblings and as you say text features to get more people involved in the show
A couple of months ago I was listening though, and the text feature was 'what is on your left hand side?' Then a week or two later they did 'what's on your right hand side?' and so on... I genuinely want to like it, but surely they can do better than that?
  16. I don't think it's necessarily his formula. Nihal's formula is very much an easy listen and text based pictures but I think they're just as good as say Coxy's text features were. I think it's more just his caring personality which makes his listeners feel warm inside. I can see how his show might be a bit like marmite though.
I suppose so. I can tell that he's probably a nice guy, he just strikes me as being a bit dull, and trying to hard. He's older than Moyles, and the way he speaks seems totally over the top to the extent that I can't connect with him. Maybe I'm growing out of what they're trying to make Radio 1. I'm only in my early 20s...
  17. That's what I struggled to get with Nihal when he first joined. Love the bloke now but I couldn't get over the corporateness and shouting BBC Radio 1 all the time.
It's a shame about that, because I think 'yoof' do want edgier DJs. They can get corporate on commercial stations. What am I missing with Nihal - I still don't get it, but I want to as I suspect I'll be hearing more of him in the future. What's good about him?!?
  18. I doubt they saw him as the next Chris. It will be an interesting transition to go from specialist DJ to playlist DJ
I'm sure they don't see him as the next Chris. But they've got Grimmy, Greg and now Dev as part of their 'next-generation' of presenters, and I don't think any of them are going to set the world alight. They need someone with a bit of edge, like a modern Moyles.
  19. Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. Dev from 1Xtra is taking over as the new host of Radio 1's weekend breakfast show. So looks like there won't be a big reshuffle after all...

BBC Radio 1 has announced that Dev, who currently presents early breakfast on BBC 1Xtra, is moving across to Radio 1 to take on the weekend breakfast show.

Twenty-four-year-old Dev replaces Nick Grimshaw who has moved to evenings on the network.

Dev has been at 1Xtra since the station launched in 2002 – first presenting a Saturday show with Reggie Yates, and then hosting his own weekend show before early weekday breakfast.

Londoner Dev has been on the early shift for the past 18 months – and he's so passionate about music that he has fitted in a full-time college course in the subject at the same time!

Dev says: "This is a very exciting chapter in my broadcasting career and something I have been working hard towards. I'm over the moon about joining the Radio 1 family and look forward to brightening up peoples mornings on the weekend!"

Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller, Radio 1 and 1Xtra, says: "BBC 1Xtra is a fantastic place for new presenters to establish themselves and Dev has done just that. I'm keen for talent to grow on 1Xtra and move through to Radio 1 so I'm delighted to welcome him onboard."

Dev starts on weekend breakfast on Radio 1 in July.

  20. I'm a big Grimmy fan, I think he's got a lot of potential and a big Radio 1 future. But this show seems like a big of a blag. He's just turning up and playing, essentially, future playlist records, rather than bringing anything new, different or challenging to the show. There only appears to be one feature, and even that's ripped off from Chris Moyles. It could be good, and maybe it will be in time, but at the moment it just sounds a bit lazy.
