Monday’s Jo Whiley show on BBC Radio 2 opened with a 100% disco Shiny Happy Playlist as part of Radio 2 Loves Disco, featuring Sylvester, Donna Summer, Tavares, the Bee Gees and the Commodores, with listeners texting in from car parks, canal boats and kitchen discos across the country.
After 8pm Whiley was joined by Sharon Horgan to discuss her new HBO Max series Youth, in which she plays a fifty-something mother, Alex, whose son moves back home from university just as her elderly parents begin to need more care. Horgan said the show explores a period of life rarely discussed openly, adding: “Nobody told you about it.” She spoke about casting Harriet Walter and 91-year-old Anne Reid, working with music supervisors and composer Griff Rees from Super Furry Animals, and revealed Kate Bush had once emailed her after a song was used in Bad Sisters. Horgan also discussed a recent guest appearance on Only Murders in the Building, including meeting Meryl Streep, and confirmed a Motherland Christmas special is in the works. She chose tracks from Barry Manilow, Shane Sparguity, Madonna and Velvet Underground as part of the segment.
Elsewhere, Whiley previewed new music from U2’s forthcoming album, revealed last week’s Infatuation track was Joy Crooks and Denzel Curry, and played a session track from Sienna Sparrow, who won Best New Artist at the MTV VMAs. She also replayed part of last week’s Sam Smith interview and performance from the London Coliseum, and closed by sending best wishes to Michael Ball following his recent stroke.
