Coffee and a roll became real
A Cardiff fresher called Sam had previously offered to meet Scott and Chris before their university DJ set for “a coffee and a roll”.
The phrase had already amused them simply because of its straightforwardness.
Sam then genuinely turned up.
He arrived carrying a plastic bag containing a selection of bread rolls and butter. There was an olive roll, cheese bread and other choices, although Scott rather rudely took a bite of the olive one before realising what it was and spitting it into the bin.
With no knife available, the solution was to dunk the bread directly into the butter.
Scott and Chris were particularly amused that Sam, only just beginning university and supposed to be making new friends, had temporarily abandoned his fellow freshers to meet two Radio 1 DJs with a carrier bag full of rolls around midnight.
The phrase “coffee and a roll” was immediately promoted as something they wanted listeners at future university dates to continue.
Chris began shopping from Scott’s will
A discussion of wills revealed Scott did not have one while Chris had only recently made his.
Chris immediately wanted to know what Scott intended to leave him.
His first request was the radio show itself. Scott pointed out that he could not leave a BBC programme to somebody in a will, although Chris argued it would be disrespectful for Radio 1 not to honour his final wishes.
He then moved on to Scott’s car, only to discover it was on finance and would come with the remaining payments.
The conversation gradually became less about mortality and more about Chris browsing through Scott’s possessions to decide what he fancied.
Radio 1 prepared to turn 50
The station’s 50th anniversary was approaching that weekend.
Scott and Chris were looking ahead to a special Saturday morning programme involving Tony Blackburn, Radio 1’s first DJ, and Hayley Williams.
Seeing Blackburn around the building surrounded by much newer Radio 1 presenters gave the anniversary celebrations an unusually tangible link between the station’s first days and its current line-up.
