The bridge survives the fire
Scott wakes to thousands of messages after a serious overnight fire at Fleet Services on the M3. Nobody is injured and firefighters control the blaze, but the services and the pedestrian bridge joining the northbound and southbound sites suffer smoke damage.
Reporter Joe Palmer visits the scene and confirms that the Scott Mills Bridge is standing and at least one commemorative plaque is intact. The windows are blackened and crossing is temporarily restricted, yet the structure may become a vital route when one side of the services reopens.
A reopening ceremony is already planned
Scott and Chris replay the grand March opening, including Chris’s speech and Rod the Curtains revealing the plaque. The fire coverage has an unexpected benefit: television reports now use the bridge’s unofficial name, securing the legacy Scott originally wanted.
Listeners suggest hanging car air fresheners from the bridge when it reopens, both as a tribute and as a solution to its notorious warm-weather smell. Joe warns that the current aroma is entirely smoke, although Scott treats that as a possible improvement.
MiC LOWRY take on Chris
All five members of MiC LOWRY play Innuendo Bingo against Chris, creating an uneven contest with six mouths of water and almost no dry area. Familiar clips about a glory hole, natural wine and an unfortunately worded cash-in-hand job produce complete chaos.
The band finish soaked but enthusiastic. Bangers continues before the Radio 1 Christmas party, while the programme closes by confirming that Friday will be Relationship Transfer Deadline Day.
