23 March 2016: Chris replaces Justin Bieber’s cancelled meet-and-greets

A Bieber-sized vacancy

Justin Bieber had cancelled the meet-and-greets on his tour, explaining that absorbing other people’s energy left him mentally and emotionally exhausted. Scott hoped he was all right, but also identified a large number of disappointed fans who still needed to meet and greet somebody.

Chris was sent to the busy shopping street once used for Stupid Street, carrying a sign and offering free replacements. Initial customers did not know who he was. Some guessed Jack Whitehall or a Radio 4 presenter before eventually accepting that Radio 1’s Chris Stark was still worth a photograph.

Scott insisted on reproducing the speed and awkwardness of celebrity sessions. Three people had to share one picture, questions were invited and immediately refused, and customers were moved on before the conversation developed. After two encounters, Chris declared himself drained and walked away shouting that he would not meet or greet anybody else.

A bad day for Bangers

Listener Rhys usually supported Scott, although he still remembered Chris having a previous choice overturned. Chris offered Rihanna and Drake’s “Take Care”, while Scott countered with Alicia Keys’ “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart”.

Rhys chose Scott, to Chris’s disbelief. The reaction from listeners was brutal: many thought both selections required improvement, while Scott’s attempt to celebrate his win only made the dispute louder. They promised to return with stronger choices the following day.

One week of bridge and one night of kebab

The show marked the first full week of the Scott Mills Bridge with a Bamboleo Wednesday gap containing Chris’s Horn Dash. Scott briefly described it as the first anniversary before correcting himself.

Attention then moved to that evening’s British Kebab Awards. Rather than prepare a complete speech, Scott and Chris planned to write it at the table and rely on kebab puns remembered in advance. This confidence would be tested as soon as they reached the stage.
