Strictly support gets no simpler
Twenty-four hours after Vanessa Feltz personally intervened in the show’s Strictly loyalties, Scott was still trying to find a diplomatic solution. Vanessa had now tweeted the photograph of him and Chris with their Team Feltz shirt, making a quiet retreat impossible.
Scott decided he could support Vanessa while retaining the right to be equally enthusiastic if Rachel Riley, Susanna Reid or Deborah Meaden appeared. It was an intentionally fence-sitting position and everybody knew it.
The discussion was a good example of how a throwaway photo had become a running story simply because the show had personal connections to too many contestants.
FaceTime joins the crowd
Chris had noticed a new phenomenon while DJing: people at gigs were holding up phones and tablets with FaceTime running so friends at home could watch remotely.
From the stage, that meant performers could look out over a crowd and see enormous disembodied faces staring back at them, sometimes belonging to people clearly sitting in bed. Scott could see the appeal for the absent fan but was less convinced by the view from the performer.
Gemma Cairney did not get much warning
Gemma Cairney arrived for Innuendo Bingo with one disadvantage: she had not realised she was going to play. Scott introduced her as the latest “queen” of the feature and sent her straight into the chair opposite Chris.
The clips ranged across Radio 1, Strictly, television and local radio, including another appearance for Vanessa Feltz and plenty of material that sounded substantially worse once isolated from its original context. Gemma’s laugh made holding water particularly difficult, and the contest quickly became as wet as Scott had promised.
She finished soaked and without spare clothes, while Scott was delighted with another strong video for the Radio 1 YouTube channel.
Fax machines, toilets and Greg James
Elsewhere, Scott was baffled after his mum asked whether he owned a fax machine, a question that made the technology sound suddenly ancient. Chris also brought in one of those small but inexplicably compelling stories about a friend’s toilet problem.
Greg James rounded things off with Real or No Real, including a claim involving Serbian dance music and the country’s version of Big Brother. Serbia was still only an occasional comic reference at this point. Within two weeks, it would take over the show completely.
