Annie Mac’s first job back is getting soaked
Annie Mac returned to Radio 1 after roughly four months away on maternity leave and was immediately placed opposite Chris Stark for Innuendo Bingo. She had brought a wipe-clean raincoat, complete with hood, which was a sensible response to the welcome Radio 1 had arranged.
Scott briefly managed to ask Annie whether it was “good being a mum”, which Chris regarded as a hilariously basic interview question. Annie answered yes and said that simply walking back into the Radio 1 offices while a news junction played had made the return feel real.
The clips ranged from The Chase and Elton John on Chris Evans’s Radio 2 show to Come Dine with Me, Celebrity MasterChef, Dragons’ Den and politics. Annie’s raincoat offered some protection, but nowhere near enough to make the game a dry return to work.
The theme tune escapes into the real world
Scott planned to finish a Freshers DJ set in Edinburgh with the Lisa and Steve theme tune, burned onto CD in gloriously old-fashioned style. He wanted new students to link arms and sway to it, turning a running joke from the afternoon show into an actual end-of-night anthem.
The couple had also acquired celebrity supporters. Naughty Boy recorded a message suggesting he could DJ their eventual wedding, although he warned that he was expensive. Avicii supplied a much less enthusiastic good-luck message which Scott and Chris nevertheless treated as proof that the world’s biggest DJs were following the story obsessively.
Friends and family tell the real story
Rather than ask Lisa and Steve how day six was going, Scott called the people around them. Steve’s sister Cat, who lived with him, revealed that he had sought advice on what to wear for movie night, eventually choosing jeans rather than comfortable jogging bottoms. He had also bought Diet drinks, sweets, crisps and popcorn, and suspiciously spring-cleaned his room soon after the relationship experiment began.
Cat thought they made a decent couple but still declared that Lisa “could do better”. Scott then revealed that Steve had been listening to his sister’s entire assessment.
Mutual friend Deaks had much bigger information. He casually announced that, if the show dug beneath what Steve had been telling them, it would discover some “lip-locking”. Scott stopped the conversation. Lisa and Steve had kissed, twice, on two different nights.
Neither had volunteered this. Their defence was wonderfully literal: the show had not asked the right question. Scott was outraged that a nation following every date had been denied the key development and wished he had called Deaks days earlier.
The revelation changed the final day. Lisa and Steve would come into Radio 1 in person on Friday and decide whether to continue as a couple or return to friendship.
