Janet Jackson on breakfast
Scott welcomed Janet Jackson to the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
The scale of the booking had been deliberately kept from him until the previous morning because the team feared he would become too nervous.
Janet was preparing for the UK dates of her Together Again tour.
Performing in Las Vegas at seven
Janet remembered performing with her family at the MGM Grand Hotel when she was seven.
They completed two shows a night, with the second beginning around 11 or 11.30pm.
She was expected to nap between performances but preferred exploring with Michael and Randy.
The children would watch the elaborate Las Vegas productions from the lighting areas and visit places such as Circus Circus.
Janet also remembered meeting performers including Sammy Davis Jr and Bing Crosby, who became family friends.
Janet and Kylie
Janet confirmed that she had watched Kylie Minogue’s Las Vegas residency.
The two had met at different points through the years, and Janet praised Kylie’s show and career.
Scott was delighted to discover they were friends.
Rhythm Nation fans
Janet described seeing a group of children dressed in full Rhythm Nation costumes.
They performed the choreography in front of her during a visit to Germany.
The effort and accuracy moved her deeply.
A musical mystery
Near the end of the interview, Janet began singing the phrase “Manchester, England, England” but could not remember where it came from.
Listeners quickly identified it as a line from the musical Hair.
Handover
Scott handed over after Janet’s interview became one of the biggest moments of his breakfast cover.
