The doggy singalong
The Radio 2 Dog Garden campaign moved from photographs and pitches into music as Scott invited dogs to respond to songs and sounds on air.
Owners sent recordings of barking, howling and other reactions, allowing Scott to assemble what he described as a doggy singalong.
The feature mixed genuine pet behaviour with the programme’s increasingly serious treatment of the Chelsea selection process.
Reverend Richard Coles
Reverend Richard Coles joined Scott for a conversation about faith, broadcasting, music and the latest stage of his writing career.
Scott revisited Richard’s earlier life in The Communards and the unusual journey from pop success to parish ministry.
Richard discussed the parts of those careers that were more closely connected than they first appeared: performance, storytelling, ritual and speaking to communities.
The conversation also covered grief and the way Richard had written and spoken about the death of his husband David. He described humour as something that could exist alongside loss rather than diminish it.
Scott asked about Richard’s crime novels and the pleasure of constructing mysteries after years spent dealing with real human stories.
Richard also joined the lighter Dog Garden material, reacting to the canine auditions and the idea that Radio 2 dogs now required campaign managers.
