7 February 2007: Laura Gets Engaged, David Blaine’s Speed of Light Stunt

Laura from the listener competition wins the prize of true love when her boyfriend James proposes during a hilariously uneventful phone call — but the unedited tape reveals Scott may have had the ending all wrong.

The show opens with a playful feature about Radio Norfolk, prompted by an email from a listener named Nathan Fletcher, which leads to playing clips from Sue Marchant’s overnight show, including a joyful segment from workers at Smithdon Chocolate and Fudge Packers factory in Wisbech, where they celebrate their colleague Big Jimmy Brown’s 58th birthday.

The main excitement of the day is Laura’s engagement news. Months earlier, the show had run a competition to find her true love, and it actually worked — her boyfriend James has proposed. Scott plays the recorded phone call where James proposed, but it’s remarkably mundane: they’re discussing keys, timings, and whether Laura will be home when he gets back. Listeners quickly text in pointing out that James never actually said “Will you marry me?” — he just agreed “Yeah, that’s fine” when Laura mentioned having a wedding like the ones on the new BBC Three show *Wedding Stories*. When confronted, Laura admits the recording may have been “slightly edited,” and Scott obtains the unedited version, which reveals James had said “You’ll have to wait a few years” — making the proposal far less certain than presented. Despite the awkwardness, Scott celebrates the couple’s upcoming wedding.

The show also features *Wedding Stories* clips, including a couple called Val and Lisa planning a Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed wedding with costume shop outfits and a coffin prop, and discusses David Blaine’s upcoming exclusive stage show where he claims he’ll “travel at the speed of light,” prompting Scott to joke that audience members should bring golf balls to test the claim.
